That sucks to hear. I really hate thieves.
It's that time of year at Ginnie again.
For those who are new to the area, here are some guidelines.
1)Never leave ANY gear out of your sight unless it's locked to something or locked in the car.
-Taking gear from the car to the tables never have your back turned, always have one person facing the gear. Lock up the car after you move gear to the table. Hide or cover anything worth more than $20 left in your car, better idea, don't bring it. Position tanks on deck so you can see them and lock scooters with chain or metal cable to stairs in water. Don't leave tanks in water before or after dive. Do not let girls pooping in the open distract you, stay focused on keeping your gear.
2)Position deco tanks in the gallery. At least the OW thief would have to take big risks to steal o2 bottles.
3)Be extra careful late afternoon/dusk. Folks have been drinking all day and are primed for action; sometimes it's cute nudity, more likely it's cracked out old gross nudity. Enjoy the free entertainment.
I heard this theft story from a dive buddy of mine @ ginnie a while back. He said he was done diving, and a fellow diver was walking up his doubles, and left his DPV , he got everthing loaded up ok, then went back to get his DPV, and seen someone loading it into their vehicle. He got into his truck, and got to the entrance, and seen a police man talking to someone. He watched as the vehicle was taking off w/ his DPV, and told the police officer, and the officer told him that he had to wait until he was finished talking with the person. Apparently they were just shooting the breeze. Anyway the vehicle drove off with his DPV and cops did nothing to assist...
Not the story I heard but then you know how they morph from person to person...he got the scooter back at Ginnie if I recall correctly...still watch your gear is good advice...knock on wood but the only thing I have lost is 2 pairs of shoes on different occasions and I am a lax locker upper and have had an annual pass for about the last decade or so.

Leave nothing behind, trust no one, keep a vigil on vehicles.
A non-diving team member is well worth a dinner or beverages or both!
Its March and Ginnie is on Spring Break attack thus dive gear is vulnerable.
BEWARE, be vigilant, be ready to handle yourself and property if need be.
Im not a start the fight but if you are going to steal from me better be ready to put up or shut up!
Im not a violent person but if I need to be, Im prepared to do what needs to be done.

It makes me so sick that such an amazing cave has to be on private property in terms of acess by car/truck .if ginnie didn't allow alcohol/drinking there almost all the idiots wouldn't be there and wouldn't be leaving trash and bottles in the river.really sucks to see people beating up something you love

Hundreds of dives there, nothing stolen, one drysuit returned by awesome drunk person who remembered how I was willing to shoot the breeze with him while gearing up, when I forgot it on the fence two hour later.
Yes there are some bad apples, had some people swimming around with a stage bottle when I returned once, but it's really not a complete war zone out there, even if this is the worst time of year.
And hiding keys at the car? Get a can light without a fancy new sealed battery, or drysuit undergarments with a pocket, or a waterproof box or a valet key. Saves the risk, which is highest this time of year.

Now if I could only learn to not drive off leaving my gear at the pavilion.
