While it sounds cool, I cannot wrap my head around why I need this feature.

Of all the dives Ive done w/a DPV I have literally never needed this.

And that's a few dives of differing lengths, depths and wrecks and OW.

Yes, I know. A hundred reasons will be offered. My point is only that I do not see a need for it for me.

Ever got line (fishing or cave) in your prop?

Its game over with the mako/ss/gavin style prop. With the suex style you can pop it off and clear it and you're back in business. The older style requires tools and there's a bunch of little parts. Screws, yoke, pitch knob, spring washers, clutch plates, drive pin. Just about impossibru to fix it in the water.

The need for this feature is exactly as aj describes. The scooter is rendered completely inoperable if you get line in the prop.

There is a fixed pitch prop option for an SS scooter.

Can you remove it underwater? If so that sounds like a big improvement

Not as easily as a Genesis, but possible.

I don't know anyone who ever had this happen in a cave and I find it very hard to see it happen.
For ocean diving, maybe, diving around wrecks, yes, I see this being a potential problem.
But back to the caves, I don't buy it..
Besides, for dives where the safe return depends on the scooter working, backups are required anyway.

There's still the spring washer stack weak point. If line is caught below the washers (like near the shaft seal) you have to take that stack apart to get to the fouled line. It can be SUPER hard to get that screw out, esp if its loctited in place. Its also tough to tighten the screw enough in water to prevent the clutch from slipping the second you hit the trigger.

Of course, you could play that card the other way and leave the screw non-loctited. That's a worse condition, imo, as getting a stick or a rock caught in the prop is a more common occurrence than line. If the screw isn't loctited in place, it will back out and once again your scooter is inoperable.

It was the cat's ass 20 years ago, and its still a functional design. There are just better options out there now.
