    Default Sidemounting LP 50s

For those that SM LP 50s, how do they feel? Are they more like al 40s sidemounted or do they ride like normal steel tanks.

Looking to get a set for short, shallow beach diving with students when I don't feel like lugging hp 100s or even 80s around.

I use LP-50's for OW and pool practice. I gave the 50's their own harnesses and set the leashes so the tanks CG was about where the LP-85 CG would be (tanks are shorter, so they ride a bit further down). Only real difference is that I need about 4-6lb ballast to make up for the lighter weight of the tanks.

It doesn't answer your question, but I would consider a SMing single AL80 and a minimalist harness.

Already have and do that. I'm looking for alittle more weight balanced rig since I dive dry all year now. With a single 80 I would need a bunch of extra weight

I sidemount steel 50's instead of a single 80 to keep in practice and muscle memory between cave trips. Can't do sidemount drills with a single tank.

I recently sold my LP-50s (didn't use them very often), but found that they rigged up quite similar to LP-85's. I had no problem diving wet with them and not needing any extra weight (although the do get a little tail light at the end of a dive). Definitely much different than SM aluminum cylinders!

I realize this does nothing to stoke your ego, but with students you should have a backmounted single.

Ask your agency how they feel about it.

My agency(PADI) is fine with wearing sidemount for all classes. Even the students can be in sidemount from the very start. There are no standard that dictate I must wear the same equipment as my student.

I know this is beating a dead horse but any reason why you feel that I should have to wear a backmount single for classes?

And during the colder months with heavy underwear i I have been diving backmount single this year for a bunch of classes but would rather carry two smaller/lighter tanks than my hp100 and backplate. For short dives.

I use 45's all the time in OW for most dives and have no problem withthem. if I wear a 3mm suit, dont need any weight. Yes I do cave fill them so get plenty of gas. They are also much cheaper then 50's.
