I looked into the 45s but doesn't seem like they are made anymore. Do you have a source?

trading 1 tank and weights for 2 tanks (which will end up being the same weight). makes perfect sense.

A pair of sidemounted 50's for a PADI instructor in class is yet another example of a bad example to follow for some unfortunately ignorant impressionable new divers. Hopefully, the divemaster in the class is not as dumb as he is looked to more often for advice from the students...

However, if the sidemounted 50's are for fun dives, ignore what is above.

I would rather the weight be in smaller more manageable tanks (for shore diving) then in weight placed all around my harness. If that makes any sense.

So, during dives where there are no skills to demonstrate to the student, where the instructor would just be basically diving, what does it matter what equipment he is wearing? And how is it dumb of said instructor to dive a small, weight balanced rig that isn't dangerous?

Cave filled 50s provide close to 68 cu ft of air, not that far from an al 80. For redundancy and weight distribution I don't think they are a bad idea, but i have never actually dove them, so i was asking for opinions from those who have. I can do without the PADI won't allow this comment from those who haven't read the standards or can't actually provide a reason why I shouldn't dive with redundancy and comfort with students.

I can't for the life of me figure out why side mounted tanks are a bad example for new divers. Please explain Frank.

I have been doing some version of side mount since the 80's. In the bad old days of the tech diver list server we would come back from poking around in tight alpine sumps to read how we were doing it all wrong, were "strokes", and were going to die. Never mind that the Florida gear would simply not fit where we were going.

I had hoped we had all moved on from that.

Sounds familiar. I started diving sumps in sidemount in 1977, but I didn't ever mention it in Florida, because of that same attitude.

I dive LP45s in SM all the time. Very comfortable and can fit through small cracks. Great for checking out a cave to find out if it goes. Also used those slightly overfilled for some cave projects that have extensive dry caving before the sump where I don't want to haul 85s or a rebreather till I know if it goes.
