All the hoopla about this recent accident is nothing compared to the current real safety situation, in reality 99.9% of untrained cave diving is actually done under the "guidance" of full cave instructors and Instructor trainers who mislead unsuspecting open water clients into thinking that they were only cavern diving when in fact they were taken on full cave penetration and did not even know it.
This IMO is infinitely worse and it is being done on a daily basis in Mexico and the DR, Florida I do not know but I have a hunch it is going on there too and I also have a hunch that just like in Mexico and the DR all the agencies and people in charge know full well what instructors are doing this, when and where, and that no sanctions are ever handed out.
You say people are willing to put they're lives in the hands of experts, well I know form experience here in the DR and also in Mexico that 99% of these clients don't even know they were taken into the cave zone, when I board a plane I put my life in the hands of pilots who I hope uphold all safety standards, open water clients deserve the same and the training agencies should step up to remove the few unscrupulous instructors who partake in this kind of unsafe diving.
Yeah we can all go on and on about what idiots these two were, how irresponsible etc.. but think about the mindset of a full cave instructor who takes open water clients way past the cavern zone, don't you guys think that is far worse? IMO they are the cancer of this sport and should all be removed.
