Trip report- EN2 ( aka Eagles Nest 2 )
Star date 832-3232
Well mid last week I got a call from a dive buddy asking what I was doing this weekend, My reply- nothing right now till you tell me what I’m diving, The reply I got was kind of confusing, something about checking out a site, hiking, swamp, EN2 , new site, bigger than the nest, fins, small tank, drinks. Sure Captain just tell me where and when and I’ll be there.. I get the call later and told to be at Hardees this Sunday at 8. There I meet up with the Captain and Lt Sulu.
We drive into the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area looking for Eagles Nest 2!. I get a quick briefing on the plan- Hunters have know about this site for years and you can see it on a map (28 35’ 38N 82 37’ 40W - View Topo) but as far as anybody knows no one has dove it. I also get a new name – Yeoman Smith and that I had to wear a red shirt….
So Captain Kirk, Lt. Sulu and Yeoman Smith ( does anyone remember a episode where Yeoman Smith lives? I don’t….not a good sign ) traveled down several fire breaks, logging roads, dear trails……… till we came to one that was “close” . Parking the vehicle on the road, we loaded up and proceeded to hike about 3 miles down a “trail” till it ended just north of EN2. there we had to cut and climb our way through almost half a mile of pure swamp land while Lt. Sulu guided us with his GPS. Then we saw the opening in the trees, it was big….. The basin is about the same size as Eagles Nest but very TANIC, looking at it maybe 1-2 foot of vis, I was ready to jump in to cool off but then we started to see them….Alligators…lots of them.. Almost 0 vis and lots of gators left no option but to send Yeoman Smith in to see if there is a good cave in there…but not on this away mission!! I stared to walk around the basin and came across a very large gator nest with lots of broken eggs, Where’s mom? I headed back to join the others and start the long trip back to the car. Talking about it, it looks like we may never know what’s there, it’s a shame I’m sure there’s a nice system down there that NO body has been to…
It also looks like I may get one of those yellow shirts soon, I think may get a promotion to Systems Engineer so I can be on continuing voyages on the starship Explorer..
Yeoman Smith
(BTW in real life I’m not a Trekkie, is was just the theme for the weekend)
