This is a classic example of why it would be nice to have a flame free or private solo diving forum. Seems like every time someone tries to write of their enjoyment of solo diving or discuss solo specific practices it always turns into a debate on whether or not solo diving is an acceptable practice.

Yeah, this thread got pretty hostile-- def need another category for this type of talk-- there's only about 15 unused ones as it is.

How or when did it get hostile? Am I the one who got hostile? I certainly didn't mean to, truth is the majority of my cave dives are solo and I only solo dive where it's allowed, I'm certainly not against diving alone, that would be pretty hypocritical wouldn't it?

JJ1978 was making a joke. Hunabku said solo discussions usually turn into debates, but this thread has proved to be just to opposite. In fact it is the tamest thread we have had in recent weeks.

It was a bit tongue in cheek. I have found it interesting that when there is an incident involving a solo dive some people point to the solo diving as a cause. This does not happen with team diving...
Could that be because there usually are more team divers than solo divers.

Of course it does not happen to team divers...they are not solo. Very hard to point out the solo diving as a cause when it was a team. Except when the dive started out as a team and ended up a solo dive.

Bobby, I get what you mean...just having fun after getting off work after 13 hours.

OBTW, (read like an AA meeting) I am Tony Chaney and I am also a solo diver. I really don't enjoy it as much as team diving but do it from time to time. I enjoy the post dive conversations, ribbing jokes, point of interest etc. Wife cannot stand the thought of me going solo. I will also add that most of all OW instructors I have worked with simply expresses their feelings that everytime they are in the water with students they consider themselves basically solo. I feel that a solo thread would be cool.

Yes, I carry two backup lights, why not two backup sources of gas? I don't include it in my gas plan, though.

Is running out of gas the proximate cause of most fatalities? Or just a consequence of previous poor decisions?

But, how many fatalities wouldn't be, if they had an extra 30 min. or more of gas? We will never know.
Careful now, or we will begin believing RB's are safer than OC
