I thought solo diving was like scooter riding, we all do it, just aren't supposed to admit to it?
One of the last questions on my NACD full cave exam asked me if I would plan on doing solo diving and if so how I planned to conduct it safely.
My answer was yes and my instructor was satisfied with my explanation.
My point being that I admitted to it before I got my card.
I would enjoy a flame free place to discuss solo diving topics.

I too have enjoyed many solo cave dives. I had to find a "comfortable" way to work out some strongly differing ideologies held by dear friends regarding the activity. I finally agreed that when planning a solo dive I would purchase gas elsewhere. We are still very good friends. Of course, I am more conservative on turn pressures, approaches to restrictions, etc. while at the same time I thoroughly enjoy the clarity of focus and lack of distraction solo diving provides.

Why is solo cavediving something to "sweep under the carpet"?

Personally I do not think it is. My very first cave dive after training was a solo dive at Little River. I ended up turning due to my comfort level (OK, my own stupidity for not putting any cookies on the T's and starting to have some concern on finding my way back out).
There are some dives that I will absolutely insist upon doing solo, since I think it is safer for me that way. Sometimes I do not want to worry or wonder about a buddy.

Does not other sports demand a solo jump or a solo flight before you get the appropriate license? In fact should not cave diving demand a solo 1500 foot penetration to insure you have learned your lessons well?
