The MO workshop was awesome! Thanks to all those out in MO who worked so hard to put it together, you guys rock! I am so happy that we were finally able to make it out that way (and here's hoping that we'll make it back for many more.) It was great seeing everyone.

I thought he was referring to the Board of Directors, not the rebreathers. And the reference was along the lines that Forrest was the best director since I went to MO.

Could be wrong, but that's how I read it.

he meant that forrest was great because he attended AND that another bod member was not so great for poking fun at the GEM rebreather.

Mike showed us the GEM at the conference in some detail and the basic ideas behind it are really quite interesting and valid. No electronics, or minimal at least. mechanical method of adding gas to breathing loop. semi-closed. gas for the rebreather is the same gas as bailout (not separate tanks unless you want them separate). manual adding possible anytime. no addition of O2 needed (adds whatever mix you have in the tanks). Adds more gas based on amount of gas in loop, not O2 concentration so O2 sensor not needed. since a little is bled off every so often, as amount in loop drops, more is added. etc.

cool thing is no electronics/computers monitoring o2 and then adjusting. no electronic failure points. any tank, even buddies tank, can be connected on the fly. no bailout bottles needed. switch to open circuit at any time. And it's way cheaper ($2,000.00 price tag including training at the meeting, maybe more now?). And four hours of bottom time on small tanks (depending on your bailout reserves).

It's a whole different philosophy from traditional rebreathers, but looks real interesting. Like a hybrid of rebreather and open circuit doubles.

I may have misunderstood some of the information, so don't quote me on this.

That wasn't me, and I suspect the guy in question couldn't build a rebreather, if his life depended on it. A lot of people "dis" anything they don't have, like Fords vs Chevys, Megs, vs Inspirations, etc.

FWIW, I loved it! It was simple and straight-forward enough, even I could understand it and felt safe driving it. I look forward to getting some more time on it soon.

And no, it DEFINITELY wasn't FW that made the comment.
