Thread: Telford Access

    Default Telford Access

My buddy and I just finished a wonderful week of diving, we managed to hit Peacock 1, Madison, Cow, and Ginnie. Conditions overall were quite good, though Peacock was a little smokey in sections. Anyway, we were getting lunch at the Luraville store (yes, they are making subs again) and we were chatting with Miss Effie, who no longer works at the store but works at the prison now I think, or maybe it's the hospital...anyway, I digress. She had mentioned that the hunt club had struck a deal with the landowners over at Telford and they have access to hunt the property. Have any of the NACD or NSS-CDS board members spoken with the hunt club board members to negotiate diver access as well. The gate can be run the same way it is at Cow so the property remains secure. I'm sure someone has looked into this already, I was just curious if there has been any negotions.

Actually I have talked to the owner at length, and they presently don't have an interest. I think you may find the hunt club doesn't include the spring property.

    Default Land Barons

Only wish the state of Florida had been wise enough to only LEASE sensitive lands like Telford to companies like St Joe, instead of deeding it to them 100 years ago.

The same St. Joe that OWNS Wakulla? The same St. Joe that is a HUGE developer of natural Florida lands?

My understanding...and again, it's second hand...is that the hunt club controls the gate. If the hunt club is willing to share access with a dive group (for a fee) isn't that a win win for both of us. By the way, forgive my ignorance I'm from Long Island and not up on local affairs, but who is St Joe

Saint Joe is the patron saint of sneak divers.

Maybe break out that old shotgun and join the hunt club. Then, while the guys are in the tree stands, just excuse yourself back to your car for a "few minutes." They'll be out there most of the morning and would hardly miss you. While you're gone, they would probably even make jokes about how that lame new guy hasn't gotten a deer all season.

Maybe we could even get the NSS-CDS or the NACD to buy a throw-down gun for those that don't own a firearm. You could just check it out from the dive shop.

"Hey, why does the new guy have to stop by the dive shop everytime we go hunting?"

It has been my experience that hunt clubs and cavers don't play well together. In TAG (TN, Al, GA) the cavers have an agreement with several hunt clubs. The cavers are welcome anytime EXCEPT during hunting season.
