    Don't post it. DO it.
Have to agree. Complaining on the forums does nothing, because all agencies are going to want first hand info, not, I read this on a forum.

Moderators note- I edited Jax's post for a comma that made it sound different than she intended, but if there is a content issue then she needs to edit it.

Where we are trained cave divers that preach safety, and us having concerns for safety assures us good landowner relations, and further access. I think this thread is important, and really deserves commentary. My apologies to those that had an off topic discussion, I don't want to take away your comments, but I moved it to Fill station to help keep this thread on track.

Why does the ignore feature not work on moderators?

If anyone who is a cave diver sees an instructor who is violating any S&P it is his or her responsibility to report it to the agency. If you know this person your name will not be disclosed. If you don't report an S&P violation and an accident results later with that instructor, you will have a tough time dealing with yourself.
Obviously that bothered you enough to post it on CDF. Now that you have read the return posts I feel it is your duty to report this incident. Cave diving is dangerous enough as it is. It is our duty to police our own sport when we see something like this. How would you like to be one of his students in a cave class? What do you think you would learn? What does the student think he can now do that you witnessed? Do your job and report this to the agency in question.

My apologies, I do hate to intervene, I guess I take the libertarian approach to moderation.

I was coming out of the keyhole and ran into an open water diver. Single tank, split fins, no H valve. Definitely an open water diver. His buddy was in sidemount. They were between the lips and the keyhole.

My first reaction was, "he saw the sign, darwin will sort it out, I've got deco to do."

When we got done with deco I ran into the pair of divers out of the water. It was then that I realized I knew one of them. One, the one in open water gear, was a padi cavern instructor. The one in sidemount was his cavern student. The instructor said he just didn't feel like "digging out the H valve"

This bothers me for two reasons.

One, he was teaching a student that being in the cave is OK with just a single tank and no redundancy.

The other is, and please correct me if I'm wrong, if he is not a cave instructor he should not have a cavern student in the cave zone at all.

I know this guy, and I know he will read this. I dove with him about a month ago. He is, I'm sure, a very good open water diver, but he is not a great cave diver. He told me it had been a while since he dove cave so he was a bit rusty. I'll be honest, there were a couple of times when he was diving with us where he got confused and we had to show him the way out. (headed down July spring because he was navigating by flow)

I know he will be mad at me when he reads this, that's ok. I'd rather be honest than liked. I have to say that...

dude, you are a very nice person, but your skills are not honed to the point that you should be teaching cavern students.

    You know who you are.
I've re read this a few times and am still left with the feeling that this is a chicken-poop way of addressing the issue and is meant to avoid confrontation.

Or am I missing something, yet again.

If you know this person you have many options rather than trying to shame them into appropriate behavior.

You can post the offenders name anywhere you want....except here. Including linking to it from here.
There has been a very clear and informative discussion about how the standards were violated.
As has been said, the OP can contact the agency (s) concerned and report it. That is their option.
What is not an option is shaming the OP for whatever decision is made.

Quit beating up the OP and give him a chance to process his options.
IANTD has been informed and is working to resolve this.
NSS-CDS is also now aware and I'm sure won't allow this individual into their ranks.
Hopefully PADI will be informed as well.

And everyone who has been playing along on here, probably now has a pretty good idea of who to avoid and who to not recommend to friends and loved ones.

CMINT, if you need any assistance contacting PADI or IANTD, please let me know and I'll be glad to help.

***I wish we could vote mods off the board...or at least filter one of them post***

The original poster should do what he wants.
Someone getting confused about the july spring lead teaching though...holy smokes, losing situational awareness like that is worse than the non h valve or split fins imo.
If the OP feels contacting the instructor personally and dealing is the best route to nip it, that's his call.
Many, many things in the world are best done face to face.

Al, what is your opinion on watching an instructor teach a night dive / limited visibility dive for an advanced class inside of the Ginnie ballroom to simulate darkness?

Maybe not too different than an instructor taking a cavern diver into Hendleys for a deep dive. That didn't turn out too good.
