While the instructor is required to be in full cave gear the student at minimum needs to be in intro level gear which could be a single tank with a H valve. Understand what I'm saying? Sorry if there was confusion.
Marissa is totally correct with the above info. MOST agencies that have overhead courses will allow the student to be in a single tank configuration as long as there is some sort of redundancy such as a Y or H valve and, of course two independent regs. The instructor, on the other hand, must be in Full Cave Gear.

Why all the hush hush? I say if what you saw is 100% accurate, file a formal complaint as well as post the instructor's name here. If he's that "rusty" and shouldn't be cave diving, then he shouldn't be instructing cavern or taking people where they aren't supposed to be. There is a high probability of PADI sweeping it under the rug or him bs'ing them and therefore nothing happening. I wouldn't want anybody I know taking a course with a guy like that, so I'd make it public knowledge.

I know you're a mod, but that has no bearing on the fact that this instructor was endangering a students life. Friend or not, he has to be reported. If this instructor has an incident in a similar fashion and cmint posted about it on here and didn't file a formal complaint, he can be brought into that lawsuit. This isn't something that we can hold hands and sing kumbaya around a fire and everything is ok. That is a gross violation of standards for any agency he is teaching with in multiple ways both in exceeding training limits as well as not being in appropriate gear configuration for instruction, and there is simply no way around it. There is no opinion, you have to report it otherwise you are potentially endangering peoples lives. Please delete that mod post, it isn't appropriate

I haven't seen anything remotely close to inappropriately disrespectful (requiring a mod reminder) given the issue at hand.

Admittedly, I'm a little concerned that in voicing this opinion I may be banned from this forum or my employer may receive a phone call. I guess that remains to be seen.

    Now that's a throw down!

The only disrespectful thing so far has been a disrespect of the overhead environment. On the other hand, isn't doing that at Ginnie kind of like asking to get hammered?

Posting the name publicly may have unintended consequences, especially if the OP is a dive professional. File the complaint, and let the agency earn their fees.

    Thank you.
In what world is that a mod post. There was zero lack of respect first of all. Secondly, I applaud the OP for stepping up and going directly to the instructor first then posting it here. But if you're going to make a "mod post" it should be something like "cdf will not allow the instructor's name to be posted". You "informing" us that it's hard to step up and report these issues in no way a "mod post".

If you're going to be a mod, can you start figuring out how to differentiate what a mod post is and isn't, or just resign your position as a mod.

I get that. There is a term that seems to have left my mind in the medical world when a doctor does not report another doctor for malpractice out of fear of irreversibly damaging the offending doctor's name. It has been studied in depth and is a major cause of continued malpractice. The lectures I sat through were to specifically try to curtail the behavior. The same should hold true in the diving world. Obviously this instructor is acting in a dangerous manner. Why should he not be properly reprimanded for it? If I had any confidence that PADI would actually do anything, then maybe my sentiment would be different, but I'm sure nothing will come of it through PADI.

There is a potential for litigation with something like this too. I think the OP is wise not to post a name publicly.
