Ive heard tell of an instructor that actually does a real dive with his students; thus mentoring them while teaching.

There is a definite stratification of buddy groups for any given individual. That individual will be able to move in a non linear fashion within those groups, being both the mentor and journeyman on any given dive. If you dont dive with people better than you and more advanced in their dives you will not grow efficiently.

And a camera helps keep "those guys" honest in form, fashion and execution. Especially when the Silt Gnome appears far downstream in a Space far, far away....

PS: Its awesome (I hear) to have dive buddies you can trust to rip off a 9 hour dive on any given Sunday with a simple flip of the switch and a few bottles chucked in a sink.

It occurs to me that both teaching and mentoring would require a lot of time actually diving. Surely this would detract from an instructor's ability to participate in cave "politics".
I can only guess that this would be bad for business???...

Note to self. Never leave home without a heated vest.

Note to self: check with BOTH members of dive team when making dinner plans.

    There goes that idea.

HOWEVER, one could endeavor to lead in their chosen field without entering into a leader-less and direction free organization with no real applied purpose and instead choose to join a worldwide exploration group that has tight controls and a definite mass-full central group that allows little interpretation. And nearly no politics but instead encourages following a proven plan of success. Not to say said group is faultless: they are usually huge egotistical tools. And annoying...

But I put money on a DPV class that creates solid divers and leaves little interpretation of "Gas Rules".

This thread is about a Golden Rule of Gas Planning as if there is One Best Way for all dives, but there isnt. Escalating risk requires additional planning and increased variable controls. And compromise.

Not necessary if you have a slate and a reel. And are not very hungry.

TEAM: SAME TIDE, SAME OCEAN. SAME CAVE, SAME DAY.

Look it up, GUE rule 43b.

Slate, reel: check (as you very well know!)

Very hungry due to rushing to make sure *I* wasn't late coming in from out of state... Ah... Yeah... Therein lies the rub!!! Lol

While I would love to lay all blame elsewhere, there was no real forethought given to a dive of that magnitude other than we had the gas so we could....IF we wanted. And I guess we wanted.

Now, back to all the gas planning conversation on DPV dives that seem to be much more plan than dive.

    Here's my simple rule:

Plan your dive. Dive your dive. Log your plan.

Simple and works for every scenario.
