and how often is that happening in real life? Ginnie gives you a nice wristband...hardly ever do I see them being cave Police however as people get in or out of the water.....
The truth is as a newly certified whatever you should have been trained to conduct dives similar in scope to the dives you did in training, it REALLY is that simple. You dive what you were trained. If you don't somehow know what you were trained than the instructor did a crappy job, their job was to make you fully aware of your qualifications and limitations when they arranged for a c card bearing your and their name on it to magically appear.

If you are looking at your card instead of your training to plan your dive..then you have a problem. Both in your instructor and frankly your judgment and/or lack of.

Well my opinion on "creative interpretation" of the rules is. If anyone is capable of doing more than one navigational decision while diving anything between sixths and thirds, then that cave diver is certainly capable of passing a (full) cave diver class.

Had my instructor caught me diving thirds of doubles with an intro card he would have kicked my head and taken my card.

    Just saying.

I would dive up too what I felt comfortable and trained for. If a full cave buddy didnt want to dive to certain limitations then we would not. We would come up with a plan, gas match, and do S drills and we'd be off.

I am responsible for myself in the water. It is ultimately up to me to be safe and competent during the dive. From my understanding no other diver is liable for me, only ones self. maybe I am wrong.

There have been cases of one dive buddy suing another over something that transpired during the dive. So,as a full cave diver, knowing my buddy was intro, and we did a full cave dive eg deco, restrictions, multiple navigation decisions etc, would I be liable if something went wrong?

Something we can't forget is the land owner who grants us this privilege to cave dive, something that is earned, not an entitlement. If we present with a card that we are diving within certain limitations, then we have a responsibility to this person. If not,we a defying this trust, and potentially putting future access in jeopardy since we know longer have mutual respect or trust.

    Thanks Kelly, good post.

I guess you could sue for anything these days. I an deffently not trained in "eg deco, restrictions, multiple navigation decisions etc". That is something I would not do. Let me ask this what is your definition of a "restriction" in respect to intro training limitation? Would the Peanut count? Obviously it has the name...

I think a restriction is where two people can't share air side by side-perhaps an instructor will clarify if I am off base.

When I took Intro (2005) it was clearly understood that I was limited to one third of a single tank or one sixth of doubles, and that the reason was to limit my penetration while I learned the craft.

Humans have a remarkable ability to rationalize doing what they want to do instead of what they ought (or ought not) to do. When I found myself stretching the definitions of my current level of certification to do the dives I wanted to do, I got certified at the next level.

Page 72 of the NACD Handbook-
    Introduction to Cave Diver Limitations

Minor Restrictions Permitted - Minor restrictions - those areas of the cave which are too small to allow two divers to pass through at the same time and require a single file formation- are permitted at the Intro Diver Level. Under no circumstance should the Intro Diver attempt entering any area compromising a major restriction - one which requires the diver to manipulate his body and/or equipment. Furthermore, there is no circumstance which justifies removal of life support equipment in the overhead environment
    Seems fairly clear to me?
