I know the kit idea of a rebreather was experimented with because warranty and liability would fall chiefly on you.
How about a crowdsourced rebreather. You know, a wiki-breather.

What about Chuck Norris? If he's scared of one we should all be!

Actually, I seem to recall watching the episode "Black Box of Death" where one of Mike's contemporaries was using a "rebreather" (scuba covered by a box) much to Mike's disdain. Mike ultimately had to rescue the individual

I am interested in rebreathers, especially the science geek/gear freak/tinkerer part of me. But I've made it a point not to spend money on things I don't need to do the dives I'm doing, and to spend the money on caving trips instead.

Most of my dives are around 90 minutes, with the longest around 150 minutes, and not deeper than 150 feet. So I'm able to do them on OC. If and when I get to the point where I want to do dives that would be better done on a rebreather, I'll think about it.

Great idea! But sealing surfaces may be tricky.

Are you all familiar with the Hollis Explorer sport? The first working test models were all made using 3D printing technology. They were working units. But for mass manufacturing injection molding was a much better option. Interesting none the less.

That's pretty cool. Although I would assume they were using a different 3D printing technology. One that leaves a much finer surface finish, and costs 30x more.

Are you going to start making one now? I think the lawyers will like it.

First, you need to dive a Revo. marvelous, reliable machines. second, when you get on it, you get comfortable, in open water for about 100 hours or so. then you go cave diving and then you realize, ####, I got 6 hours of duration! the time pressure is gone! yea, yea, i know all about bailout. but, having been a cave diver since 1987, i can't describe the feeling when i first got comfortable CCR cave diving. it is a completely freeing experience. I will never dive OC cave again. I know, unless I go with a sidemount rebreather, that there are places i can't get into, but I am not that interested in going thru long passages of super small #### anyways.
