ok thanks for the replies guys.
i am doing this as part of a paper on a topic i know nothing about.
This could ultimately result in a possible design solution at your benefit.

    Any ideas are welcome.
Im not necessarily just looking at aesthetics. Both functionality and user-interaction are important in any product design.

    cheers

Yes...but it was extremely complex for a regulator, had parts that had to be machined to very precise tolerances and proved to be exceptionally difficult to maintain in service. So while it was (and remains perhpas the best second stage ever made, it was only produced for a few years, was not an economic success and was discontinued as it was very difficult to support in the field, and most of those that remained in service were converted to use the center balanced internals in the much simpler to produce and service "Air 1".

Consequently, if the college student who had designed it had a greater knowledge of the diving requirements and the realities of the LDS based regular service model, he'd have made far better choices in terms of priorities and design requirements, and designed something like the Air 1, which gave 95% of the Pilot's performance in an easier to produce and service package - one in which the basic internal design elements persisted for over 20 years in later D300, D350 and D400 design evolutions of the center balanced valve design.

Which is to say, a person knowing nothng about regulator or cave diving equipment design can add badly needed fresh perspective, but they would be well advised to be very thorough in researching as many apsects as possible of the universe in which that design must function.

I don't dive rebreathers, but one thing I have noticed is a vast majority of them do not have a means for monitoring CO2 levels in the breathing loop. When you look certain medical ventilators (mainly anesthesia machines), you'll notice they are actually rebreathers. For some time now, CO2 monitoring has been used in anesthesia and has even started to be used in prehospital medicine. The "End Tidal CO2" systems used in the prehospital setting are actually fairly rugged. I know that if I ever started diving a rebreather, I would want to be able to monitor my CO2 levels. People who already rebreathers might say that it is unnecessary, but I can tell you from experience how much a end tidal CO2 level can tell you about metabolic status and many other things.

We need to dive! I was the "foul reel fouler" for the longest, but I have one now that I haven't been able to foul, despite my best efforts. I've even handed it off to others. No one has fouled it yet! Your opportunity to be the first awaits!

    Ruben,

That would be a project that would not only pass you in that class, but make you millions.

True, I know I won't be getting a rebreather until this is developed.
