    Default The Lost Sea

My son received his October issue of "Boys' Life" and announced "Dad, they have cave diving in this issue." "Now that's a different merit badge", I thought. Anyway, it was about a group of scouts camping in Craighead Caverns (commercial cave) in Tennessee. the cave features a large underground lake dubbed "The Lost Sea". The story told of exploration of the lake by Jim Wyatt and other cave divers who surveyed the lake in the mid 70's. The story said they surveyed about 1,500 feet of passage until huge rocks started falling from the ceiling. Jim, is this accurate? Was the exploration published anywhere?

Interesting. Sounds like it's time for someone to go back with a rebreather.

Land of Enchantment -- not so great for cave diving, but mighty scenic!

Ken Paramore and I toured this place recently, it's quite interesting and worth checking out.

I was there summer 2009 and the guides on the river tour say it is "bottomless".

Yes, you just keep going, through the earth's core and wind up in the Indian Ocean.

You mean we wouldn't be upside down in China?

I can't believe so many people make that mistake. I remember in the third grade when the teacher said something to that effect. I asked her, "If we're in the northern hemisphere, and we dug straight through the earth, how could we end up any place other than in the SOUTHERN hemisphere?" She looked at the globe and said, "I never though of that."
