As a statistics teacher, given equal probability among the users, it would actually be for 1 fatality per 10 CCRs:
9 to 1 (9:1) odds of surviving and 1 to 9 (1:9) odds against surviving.

    Not to quibble, but don't you mean 9 TO 1 odds and 1 TO 9 odds. 1 in 9 is a 11.1% chance....not 10%.

Actually I was thinking about that when I went to lunch and decided I would change it when I returned and also show it as a mathematical ratio.

I don't know how many rebreathers have been built, but that seems like a lot of expired divers. Please correct me or help me to understand what she meant. thanks.
The wording seemed a little unclear, I understood her to be saying that one out of ten rebreather makes has had a diver die while using them.

Throwing any homebuilt/garage units out of the equation, that actually sounds very low to me. I would hazard to guess pretty much all the well known manufacturers have had someone die while diving their rebreather. Please note, I did not say die from using their rebreather, big difference.

It's bad luck to be superstitious.

Well, I think you all misheard what she said. To paraphrase I think she said:

"We have to come up with some sensationalistic boowah or everyone will notice that Wes is getting old and bagged out".

Brian then said, "Hey, I know a hole where some poor putzes body is aging poorly, so we can go and film that".

To which Wes replied "Sounds good, and I'll wear a really cool red dew rag".

At least that how I think it went.

    Default Rebreathers vs Cave Diving

I find the "1 in 10" a little hard to believe- but my unit is probably nicknamed "yellow box of death" for a reason.

I think rebreather fatalities are probably in line with cave diving fatalities in the 60's and 70's. Once training requirements, standards, and mandatory equipment rules were enforced, fatalities per # of cave dives dropped. They still happen, but not like the bad old days. (My buddy and I taught ourselves to cavedive in the mid-70's. It was hard to even find an instructor then)

Today, rebreather training standards are all over the place. There are good rebreathers you can buy in kit form- until very recently there were no instructors for those units.

Rebreathers are not intuitive. Unlike open circuit, you can be breathing just fine- and not know you are breathing too much/to little O2, or too much CO2.

Rebreathers don't kill divers. Lack of training and complacency kill rebreather divers.
