This is something I think about a lot. I'm in a similar boat as you, perhaps even more difficult, as I'm just beginning my cave training (FTR, I've been diving over 4 years, 170 dives to date, including a few cavern dives with my cave instructor as part of my training). I'm taking some addl. training in December, and if that goes well, then I plan to hold there and just go diving for quite a bit... until I'm absolutely comfortable with those kinds of dives. Then I'll consider moving on. During this time, I'll need a lot of buddies willing to dive at "less than full" cave. I can't ask my mentor to dive with me all the time. And, other than my cave/tech instructor and a few others, I have yet to meet the majority of the cave community.
My mentor tells me the best way to gain buddies is to hang out at the different sites, shops, or places like Dive Outpost etc., and just talk to people. I'll be trying that. First, I'd probably watch them from a distance. Watch how they dive with others... Watch how they are "on the surface." Go to as many social events as I can and do a bunch of networking. It isn't a perfect predictor of how a person behaves while diving, but it does give a little insight into personality. If I'm comfortable with them in those scenarios, and perhaps, after a little vetting from those I already know, then I should be comfortable approaching them for diving.
I would, of course, ask about cert level and number of dives done at that level, and if they wouldn't mind coming down to my level (at first, I'd probably want to go with people higher than me, then perhaps those *at* whatever level I am). Of course, at this point, I would appreciate as much planning, "conservatism" & rule following as I can get, as that is my personal preference. Both my mentor and cave/tech instructor have given me solid backgrounds in re: practices, techniques, task mgt, gear setup etc. Now, I have to get comfortable with the diving itself. Of course, it's just as important for me to be as honest with a potential buddy about my skills as I seek from them. I understand if others more experienced would rather not take on a cave "newbie," and I would not want them to be uncomfortable either.
Hopefully, it works a bit like that movie... "Pay it Forward." People mentor and help you get the experience you need now, and then you do it for those that follow you later on.
So, I'll be training between 12/13 & 12/17, and I'll have a free day on Fri. 12/18 up in cave country if anyone wants to go. I'll be traveling down to the Sanford area on 12/19 as previously discussed, so if anyone wants to do lunch while I'm waiting for the Auto Train...![]()
