Hill 400 in need of repair.

Dove ginnie today (2/5/23) at about 1pm. When we came to the hill 400 line there were several jumps to it and the small rock outcropping the start of the line was attached to had broken and the line was free floating loose. We repaired it but the line was very tight without much slack and we were forced to tie it off to another small rock outcropping. Its in need of a better repair, but we would have had to move multiple peoples jump lines and weren?t comfortable doing that.
It probably needs to be done on a weekday with less traffic. Our repair will hold for a while but if someone isnt being careful I?m sure a hard enough tug could break off the rock finger we tied into to.

It will likely need line added or to be backed away from the mainline because there wasnt much slack to work with. Though the jumps on the line could have made it seem worse

noted; will bring some line to match. no big deal to splice in a new leader. that whole area is worn down pretty well, so might be 'fun' finding a proper new anchor.

That was the issue. There werent enough anchor points in the immediate area without removing at least 2 teams jumps. For me that was a no-go unless we couldnt get a decent temporary fix. Ive repaired lines before but not sure the protocol when it comes to repairing where theres other jump lines that would have to completely removed and replaced. And didnt want to have to explain it via wetnotes if they were exiting while we were repairing.

your fix looked pretty good given the circumstances. put a longer leader in from the first arrow into a more beefy anchor down in the crack.



gonna see if i can source some rope a bit closer to match the rest of the line and do more permanent fix tomorrow or Wednesday. o7

got a more permanent fix put in place last night. put some extra wraps on the anchor down in the slot for when it needs repaired next time. the load is on the anchor wrap, and there is a single fisherman's bend securing the tail. we'll see how it holds up over the weekend, and throw a second bend or some tail lashing if needed.

Ive repaired lines before but not sure the protocol when it comes to repairing where theres other jump lines that would have to completely removed and replaced.

so, we might wanna split this off into it's own thread, but i wanted to close the loop (ha!) on it. disclaimer, i am not an instructor or professional rigger; just someone who grew up on the river playing with rope. if there's a better way to go about this, im all ears.


our training had line repairs done simply to get the line back in place and secured. typically by putting a loop in the working end, and then using that to splice a spool in, loop to loop. then running the spool out to an anchor. gets the job done, but isnt very pretty, and definitely not a final fix.

in this case, the line was still secured and this was only an anchor upgrade, was to attach the new line to the existing line using a fisherman overhand, which is just a smaller version of a a nail knot: https://www.animatedknots.com/nail-knot this will hold secure if cinched tight enough, but likes to work loose over time on a dynamic line if not upgraded to a double fisherman under load. new line is ran to the new anchor and pulled taught to ease the load on the old line. the old line can be cut out, with the new old tail used to complete a double fisherman bend: https://www.animatedknots.com/double...mans-bend-knot

if there are jumps in place, the old line can be left in place temporarily, with the load being carried by the new line. the old line's tail / anchor can be removed, trimmed to remove the loop, and placed into a fisherman overhand as well, leaving the jumps intact on the now somewhat slack section. worst case, you'll need to pull slack out of the jumps, but that's easy to do without actually disconnecting them via sliding the wrap on the boltsnap.

ends up looking like the attachment. white line is old line, black line is new line.
