Default Should I get HP-117 or HP-120 tanks?

I could have asked this question on so many forums but I wanted to ask cave divers since you all are "masters of trim." I would like to buy a few tanks for single tank diving in wet and drysuit. I am 5.10 and wide built. Would an hp-120 tank be too long on me to make me bottom heavy and upset my trim? I was thinking of getting the HP-117 as it is shorter and fatter and holds almost the same gas but to those who use HP-120, how short can you be to still make that tank work without upsetting your center of gravity and tilting you head up?

    Thanks.

    Ask your instructor.

This is for general open water diving. I do not have an instructor as no one in open water care about trim man. They just strap whatever they need and swim around.

I would go with the 120 as it will be easier to push though the water. You can adjust trim by the position of the tank bands. My 5' 2" wife used one for years. I have always preferred the HP100 but feel the 120 dives pretty much the same.

I was going to stay out of this conversation... but my inner Draker is screaming... "YOU NEED AN INSTRUCTOR"

Personally, I'm confused by whole HP cylinder thing... do they even have a use in freshwater?? I mean what sane cave diver would be diving in salt water.... ugh...nasty stuff.

literally the point of this forum is to discuss stuff, so whenever people ask questions and the responses are "go talk to your instructor" you're just adding another nail to the coffin of forums like this one.

At 5'10" you are probably too short to comfortably dive HP120's and in the confines of the specific tanks I would probably go with the 8" bottles. That said, at 5'10" I would probably recommend going with 133's which are a better balanced tank IMO.

I personally use HP120's, but I'm 6'3" with a long back so they are the right length for me and something like a FX117 would be short enough that sitting up would be difficult on a boat.

I totally agree.. and by no means was I suggesting "quit asking silly questions and go find an instructor" It just seemed like the point in the conversation that Draker would jump in and berate me for asking a question....

and it was a serious question as to why HP vs LP... I see HP being of benefit in salt.. but only in salt due to the extra weight an HP cylinder has.

Maybe you should ask your instructor.

But I don't dive salt... will you be my instructor?
