If I'm unsure of the person and their capabilities I ask a few of my regular dive buddies if they're familiar with the in particular person. Another good thing to do would be kind of a "check out" dive with the person. I've never asked someone to see a card as it seems insulting but maybe not a bad idea at times. Speaking with the person for a little while usually tells me a lot of what to expect. Thoughts?
I agree, talking to them will tell you a lot. I have even had people go ask their instructors if they should dive with me.

    .
That is what the snap and gap was at Hill400 area circa 90s. All it did was cause confusion because no one operated it correctly, and caused a couple incidents.

Yes, but I didn't listen to him...

Am I the only one that finds the description of this dive absolutely horrifying? If this lady had never been to Ginnie before, she has no idea where she's going once you jumped right at the Maple Leaf. This is a total trust me dive. And why would you "reel people in?" That's just weird. A ceremonial act that makes everyone feel better? If you're going to do a blind jump, just own it, and skip the underwater theatrics.

I disagree. This procedure is not a blind jump; it's totally acceptable in a tourist cave.

Russell, I generally agree with what you have to say,but denoting something as acceptable in a tourist cave ads complacency to a plan because people infer two sets of rules. Overhead is overhead to me,regardless if it is Peacock, or some river cave in the Withlacoochee. Following a set of rules that increase survivability is applicable to all caves, and deviating increases your risk.

I think you need a timeout for calling Russell a deviant.

We still love Russell, even though he covets his guilty pleasure of Sonny's BBQ. You have to like someone that hails from (as Tim Wilson says) the entertainment capital of the world.
