Ive never seen any kind of guard there and good luck getting the sheriff to drive all the way back there and get their truck all dirty to chase some OW divers away.

After last set of fatalities there and the trouble it caused, I bet it wouldn't be that hard. As for guards, when I lived in Tampa and dove there regularly I saw them more times then not

Was the principles of Darwin explained to these future award winners?

If cave diving were Star Wars, who would be Yoda?

Did you tell them the story of the Christmas Day deaths?

Or suggest watching the deceptively easy way to die video?

Or, did you get the name of the shop where they get fills, so you can call the shop/instructor and explain their liability if these guys kack? (Maybe the shop won't give them fills anymore?)

It's a tough situation but it's probably worth putting some good effort into so they understand the danger.

I'm just impressed with the single tank. I don't have a fabulous sac by the time I hit the mound it would be time to turn

I believe he addressed your concern by explaining he almost ran out of air once. If you're not diving thirds I bet you can get a good 10 minutes of silt angel making on the top of the mound before the regulator starts breathing hard.

If you really want to save a life, I suspect the best thing to do is ask if they'd like to do a ballroom dive to cover some of the skills necessary for cave diving, offer to buy lunch or pay the $30 entry fee for them. Then you've got a more open line of communication and can encourage them to take a class. I suspect any remarks at the actual dive site won't be taken as much more than a condescending know it all-- no matter how you deliver your message.

Well I suppose a good silt angel is as good a reason as any to try it. I'm free this weekend lets get at it! I don't have any spools though think the string from my kite will be good enough?

    You're probably right.

Is it wrong that my primary concern (mostly because I feel that this is the only thing we can really action on) is protecting our dive sites from stupid lawsuits or closure resulting from unfortunate events by under qualified divers? (Or even non divers)

I really appreciate the good deed of trying to communicate and mentor these folks but I can't help but think that ten minutes later some other jokers will probably show up. Feels like an un-winnable battle. That being said, I know I've tried to talk to some folks myself. It's an uphill battle.
