I've tried every which way and they are all cumbersome. Wouldn't it be nice if there was an user definable and printable logbook the size of one of those dive logs that have replaceable pages.....

There is...Excel
Of course if you want to download from your computer, then that's another story.
I've used a bunch of different log Software because I am not satisfied with what comes with my dive computers. (So jealous of Shearwater)
Used excel for years and still do. Built a spreadsheet w formulas.
Been using Macdive lately and I am pretty happy with it as far as it goes.

Excel +1. Formulas for counting dives by year, site, buddy, and type. I email it to myself periodically as a backup. Email or txt myself notes while I'm out so I can log when I'm back. I also don't keep any details past what I care to see, which isn't much. Mostly a narrative.

I still likie my UWATEC software for my SmartTec. If I want to enter in more information, I can. Most of the dives I do locally I have already done 100 times, and dont have a lot to add.

Stop logging them. Just one more thing you can eliminate and start enjoying your time at home with the family.
Your wife will have one less thing to harp on (or husband) and you can, in turn, spend more time day dreaming about dive trips and how to pay for them.
Seriously, I only track (not log) my rebreather dives just so I can see when I hit the hours milestones. Once I do, I will be free of it!
I respect those that feel compelled to log but I do not.
I would think with most downloadable computers you could just add notes and move on, no?

Not if you own a nitek. They don't seem to want to make software to work with any OS except windows 95. I'm exaggerating a bit but I haven't been able to get nitek software to work in a long time.

Probably not exaggerating much.
Never tried to download the Niteks I had so I'm no help. I hear the Shearwaters are fairly simple but Ive never tried mine so who knows.
Be neat if they just dumped all the down loaded data into a pre-cast log program that you could also add pages into when you wanted in case you dove without...not that Id use that either. But cool to think about for all the tech geeks out there.
Jason--you can make all kinds of stuff in a 3D printer, you are a computer Guru, but you cant put something together that would be fun for the whole group?
Really!

I use paper.
I thought about trying to use software to log dives, but I spend so much time in front of a computer for work that I enjoy writing (scribbling?) in my paper log when I get the chance to log my cave dives. I've heard good things about SubSurface (http://subsurface.hohndel.org/), which was written by some pretty crafty programmers. It's free (as in freedom) software, so if the people currently using it were to quit, then I could always find a way to update the program or at least extract my data if need be. I'd love to hear any reviews from people here that have used it.
It also appears to be able to download from a wide variety of computers (and you can add your own and support the community too!), but mine's not on the list nor do I have a download cable for it.

I keep a paper logbook and also use the Shearwater log on my laptop that my Petrel downloads into via Bluetooth. After 34 years in the emergency services and health care it just feels natural to document everything I do, just like at work.

Which Nitek?
DR web page is now suggesting two different third party dive log programs for the Q. One for Windows and the other is for Macs.

Now my Q is simple to download. Can't say quite the same for the other Nitek variants I have owned.
