Any decent database program will work. Like some said, Excel would work, but it isn't really a database program, and it is possible to have the columns slip if you don't know how to use it.
Possibly the simplest is a word processor. You can even set some to print on the paper that goes in the "leaflet logbooks".
Couldn't agree with Forrest enough, but my solution was different. That is precisely why I used Subsurface. As I have moved through rec to tec and computers inevitably changed, I found it a major pain to transfer dive logs between oem dive log programs, plus Shearwater's software is REALLY basic. I needed something device independent which could download from any of my computers (I'm lazy so I end up download dives once every few months, I keep track of dive sites in my blackberry's calendar). There are only 2 programs that I found that fit the bill, Subsurface and Diving Log 5.0 I didn't see a compelling reason to justify the cost of Diving Log 5.0, but know others who use and like it. Getting your shearwater to link up can be a bit of a pain in subsurface, once its setup it works great. I was able to use divelogs.de as an initial intermediate step to get the bulk of my logs from my old oem database into subsurface, and as a plus, you can routinely upload from subsurface back to divelogs.de to create an easy off-site backup of your log for than time when your desktop/laptop inevitably dies, but also printing a copy and filing it as well doesn't hurt, just in case.
That reminded me of the question, "What is the difference between the Rosetta Stone, and a floppy disk?"
I've been using macdive and have found that syncs great with all my dive computers. They have great support and I do like using it as it keeps track of everything, even equipment servicing dates.
I've considered making a case for a small android device. I wouldn't be hard to drive an interface based on nudging of the device. That sensor is already there. You'd have to make a pressure sensor that plugged in over the USB or headphone jack, which is the part that's out of my realm. I'm sure someone with arduino experience could do that part, if there's a suitable depth sensor available. I'd love to have an android device a dive computer. I think it's the future of dive computers. Let the manufactures worry about the quality of the algorithm and interface, and not the hardware.

I just transferred several hundred dives from Uwatec's Smart Trak to Mac Dive and I couldn't be happier. Bluetooth transfers direct from my Predator. I still have about 150 dives logged on paper that I'm considering scanning, but haven't gotten around to that yet. I also download into the Shearwater Dive Log if I want to see the status of all three cells during the dive.
