I'd really discourage the use of trex, azek or any other composite decking. While the would hold up great underwater they are all far too flexible and will likely break under a heavy load (such as my fat ass in a set of 108's) Now, you could space your joist and stringers on 12" centers and it would probably be fine......but then you have the additional cost for that material. Personally I see nothing wrong with using 5/4 treated decking for the decks. I have enough 5/4 Ipe deck boards to do just the steps at both Twin and Hole. I'd be glad to donate it but we'd need to figure out a way to get it from VA to FL. Ipe coupled with the stainless all thread rods would make the steps damn near bullet proof.

You are right Trex is flexible, and there would need to be significant engineering to make it load worthy, which is what was done with the steps at Emerald. Many agencies have shyed away from putting treated lumbar in submerged areas because of leaching and pollution that occurs.

Yes but if you recall at Emerald, the Trex is supported by treated lumber, so the pollution problem is still there.

But the treated lumbar is kept to a very minimum and very little is submerged. A lot of thought process went into this.

Depends on how deep the pond is, on any given day, but 3-4 minimum.

See my quick drawing. I would need to know the width between the verticals to fab the correct width step. Also would need to know what a good "run" or "depth" of the tread would be, I'm thinking around 8-12" maybe. I would be willing to donate the aluminum and my time to fab in my hobby shop.

    Also, what's the time table?

Currently, the decks have steps, not a ladder. It is hard to climb a ladder with doubles on.
