Definitely will reach out to you guys soon. This isn't going to be a cheesy attempt for a good purpose. We're going to do a good job. Hopefully the video will be the perfect mix of interesting, exciting and terrifying.

I hope to have some more info soon and then we'll be reaching out for help.

Stupid question: Let's say I want to buy a few copies of "A Deceptively Easy Way To Die" and donate them to my local OW dive shops... What restrictions does NSS-CDS make on the use of this video, and does anyone know off hand, what would NAUI/PADI rules be regarding showing this video to OW students?

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

When Tracy was an active PADI OWSI, she showed it to all of her students. She says that PADI requires instructors to cover all of the required material for a class, but as far as she knows they do not restrict instructors from adding additional material.

The video was produced by the NSS-CDS. I would bet that everyone associated with it would like it distributed to as many divers as possible without restriction.

If you're reproducing the video, it needs to be more brutal with less narrative - film it from the OW diver's POV; strap a GoPro to his head for the vid duration...

    scene 1
He's sitting in the pub discussing a cave with his mate, they laugh, discuss and pontificate; they're dive masters and know it all
    scene 2
He's in the water with his mate and they okay each other after doing some pseudo OW S-drills
    scene 3
they're beyond the death sign and can see the gold line in crystal clear water, tapping & flapping each others fins and giving okay signals how great the dive is
    scene 4
i small-ish squeeze approaches, no problem (vid shows flashback to their diligent planning in the pub), they swim onwards
    scene 5
oops, trailing diver kicks up some silt in the low-flow squeeze; the passage opens up, so they continue unaware of what's behind them
    scene 6
they turn the dive and the terror begins, exacerbating each and every difference between cave cert and OW...they're light goes, did they run a line? they check their air
    scene 7
the POV switches to the other divers eyes watching his mate start to panic as they both think 'what have we done'
    scene 8
end sequence shows simple message - "Caves kill - get certified or STAY OUT!"

Basically, you need to scare OW divers' into not going there in the first place. It's vids like this that make you realise they'll let anyone have a blast @ OW.

These are some very good ideas, similar to what bpcfire was sharing with me privately. Maybe you guys get together and knock this out with guidance/support from the education committee of the CDS? I happen to know the chair and he is a rockin' dude.

While soliciting some cash, and producing a fantastic high def movie is the easy part; getting agencies, instructors and students to use it and pay attention to it will be an uphill battle. I hope we can make it happen.

I should have some more information about what we're doing soon. Once I have all the info, I'll post it somewhere so you can chime in or contribute.
Keep me in the loop on this, I'll throw a few bones into the coffers.

edited to add: pun was unintentional.

Be cool if a hollywood director who uses cave diving in their movies would help to make an improved version.
The cave community has some talented film people but folks that are used to telling stories the public pays to watch could make a huge difference.

Maybe put something in there (or a scenario) about not letting others take you in on a tour dive, even if they're qualified!
Try to scare them into being responsible for those who should know better...

    Keep Calm and Cave On.
