You'll no more manufacture a sign that can't be torn up anymore than I can put a mailbox that can't be busted. Actually I can, but figure if I did, some drunk would hit it in their car and kill themselves, and I'd be trying to explain why I built a mailbox out of .500 plate steel. I have always been amazed with the idea of putting up a brick column two feet off of the roadway in the name of having a mailbox match your house.
I really think they see it as a challenge, both mailboxes and signs.

My neighbor had enough of people bashing his mailbox so be built a concrete, rebar reinforced mailbox. I kid you not, the next time this happened, we came home... bashed box, bashed box, bashed box...... broken bat LOL

The same neighbor also had issues of people drunkenly driving through the middle of his yard (he lived on a corner lot). One day we came home to see a car smashed on his mailbox. The mailbox didn't look like it was even touched.

I've just left the last smashed one up, it's still serviceable and I guess since it's already smashed, it's no fun as it's been left alone since

If you live in rural TX, OK panhandle, western KS, or eastern CO please put your mailbox at least 6' from the roadway...we move countless 18-26' wide loads along that corridor every year. That puts at least 5' of overhang out each side of the trailers! It's amazing how many people when asked to wait on the shoulder til the oversize load passes will pull back onto the road less than 20' in front of us...at that point we have to decide between a moron or a mailbox! Mailboxes don't sue, but morons families do...

But these people need to be eliminated from the gene pool, it's a service to humanity that you are providing. You should not be able to sue someone for providing such a valuable service.

Unfortunately, I'd imagine the USPS would disagree, preferring the mailboxes remain flush to the roadside. It would cost extra time if the letter carrier had to drive/walk that extra 6' to the box to deliver/pick up mail. And since they aren't responsible if a box gets whacked by a wide load (or kids playing "mailbox baseball", etc. etc.)...

Actually, in the areas where Bentley's referring to, the mail carriers just drive off the road to put the mail in the box--and it keeps them from getting hit by traffic moving at 60mph on those roads.... Same thing for rural farming areas in a lot of FL....

Fair enough... We don't have 60mph roads exposed to residential areas (and, thus, boxes), but we have some that are 45mph. Not that much different, and individual boxes are still flush to the curb. They are moving towards "box islands" (where a bunch of boxes are grouped together), which is a little safer and takes less letter carrier time.

The mailman that drops off the mail at my school (very small school) drives an old jeep cherokee and just runs off the road a liitle bit to get to the mail in the mailbox. Plus if the mailbox is a few feet from the road the farmers with there tractors don't have to worry about them as much.

The primary hazard to mailboxes on my road is the town snowplow trucks, though farm equipment and log trucks are also possibilities. That's why I have a post office box. Also, it gives me an excuse to go down to the village once a day. On my days off from work, I often don't see another person (other than Tracy) all day except when I go to pick up the mail. That suits me fine.
