    Default Genesis scooter demos May 22nd -28th

    I will be in the High Springs and Wakulla area for some diving next week and I'll have a Genesis 600 with me if anyone wants to try it out.

    22-24 High Springs - Amigos
    25-26 Wakulla - Cave Connections
    27-28 High Springs - Amigos

    Let me know if your interested and we can set up a day/time.

    Steve at Cave connections will soon have a Genesis 1200 and the new 1500 scooter as part of their fleet and in about a month, Wayne at Amigos will have a 1200 available as well.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    This would be a hard decision on which scooter to buy if it came with LiFE batteries

    what's this 1500 you speak of

    if ( $clue == 'none' ) { read ( sig & avatar rules | forum rules ) && search ( forums | google ) }
    if ( $answer == 0 ) { post->question }

    Thanks Jon, we might take you up on that for Sunday.

    Superlyte, The LiFe cells can tolerate a little more neglect (like leaving a black scooter cooking out in direct sun) and tolerate design by home builders a little better, but are significantly heavier. Come on out and take the Genesis for a dive. It will speak for itself and if you want to DIY a LiFe pack, we could build you one without a battery. You could probably get around 800Wh of LiFe into a Genesis 1200 body.

    Hi Tommy, The 1500 has 300 more watt hours of battery than your 1200, is about 3" longer and weighs 50lbs. Steve wanted as much battery as I could pack in without a significant battery redesign. We changed to a new extrusion for the battery housings that let me slip in a few more cells and viola, 1500. Although, by doing that, the mass is more centered in the 1500, so you don't have the mass biased to the right side, like on yours, to help with counter torque for the spinning prop.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Jon,

    I've been playing with the idea of stator vanes to help counteract prop torque, what do you think? Ideally counter rotating props, but that's way beyond my DIY capability.

    Yes, I had the same idea when I designed the Genesis nozzle. You'll notice six threaded inserts on the trailing edge of the nozzle lip for attaching them. Not really stator vanes, but more deswirl tabs. Some day when I have some time to play with it, I'll make some tabs, but anything like that will cut into thrust efficiency and range. For now I'm playing with a wrist leash on the control handle so you don't need a death grip to hold the torque.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Thanks. It's not really the DIY component that excites me (I'd have a professional build the LiFE battery anyway). It's not really the sitting in the sun component that excites me. It's the 2000 cycles versus 500 cycles that will keep me from buying a LiPO battery. It's also the fact that I have kids and a wife that I like and they would not like me if I burned down my house with them in it.

    I get that 500 cycles will last most people many many years of diving. But I make 200-300 dives per year. I'd prefer most of them to be DPV dives. I really can't afford to spend $2000 every two'ish years on batteries.

    With that said, I've combed through your website, and your scooter is very exciting. The ONLY drawback for me is the batteries. I believe everything else is truly innovative for the first time in DPV tech in quite a while.

    You also have to figure that you can get 2-4 dives per charge cycle on the 1200 or 1500, which brings the cycle count down to around 100 cycles per year. At that point, the cycle life and calendar life are about the same, 5 years. LiFePO4 claims a 10 year calendar life and you'll need to cycle them more often due to the lower capacity, but likely not enough to reach the cycle life before the calender life. If you don't need to push epic long distances or can charge it a bit between dives and don't mind a the extra weight, LiFePo4 is not a bad choice. The electrical outlets on the pavilion at Ginnie come in handy for topping off the Genesis 600 batteries between dives.

    The Genesis motor controller is very tolerant of higher voltage than what we run it at, but switching to LiFePO4 would not match up exactly with the voltage set points we have for power limiting when the batteries are down to the last ~10% or the low voltage shutdown, which are set for the discharge curve of standard 3.7V Li-ion cells. An 18S or 19S LiFePO4 pack would get you in the ballpark. Even when it shifts into the power limiting mode, it still has as much thrust as average scooters. (35-40lbs)

    Cheers,
    Jon

    I tested this scooter out in the devils system this week and I am very impressed. 1/3 the weight of my current scooter and same power, stablity and better speed control. I just got to figure out what I can sell so I can buy one.
