    Default Some CCR help

    Guys:

I'm considering getting into CCR diving. Well, not considering, I've decided.

Anyway, can you guys tell me about what it costs for sorb? For those of you who know me, I generally buy a truckload of something take what I need, then sell the rest. Realistically, how much can I anticipate spending per dive?

I've kinda gotten used to free gas fills. I hope diving CCR doesn't crunch my style

Who am I kidding, I have no style.

Believe it or not, that was the final straw that made me decide not to go CCR. I think I figured $6/hour in sorb costs vs $0/hour in nitrox...

I think if you can afford to go ccr, then go for it. It's advantages in the overhead far outweigh the cost, but then what kind of diving are you hoping to do ? Like Russell says, unless you are intent on going full bore into the unknown, it probably will not be worth the high cost of obtaining the training & equipment outlay. Some years ago, I would have loved to to pursue the CCR path. Today, it is not realistic for me, as I have all I can do to get my current backmount to side mount & get back in the water. I will be happy to once more go diving with Sludge & the gang, with or without ccr or sidemount. It all takes time! I wish you the best ^^

Take the weight of a keg of sorb and divide that into the weight that the canister holds on the rebreather you choose. Then take the cost of the rebreather compare it to the cost of nitrox and trimix fills for say 5 years. I say 5 years because by then you will want another rebreather.

When you figure that you are going to have to dive it a LOT in that five years to pay for itself, ask yourself the following:

Am I wanting to get a rebreather to:

    1) Save money on trimix dives?
    2) Do the dives I do or planning on doing call for the extended bottom times of a rebreather?
    3) Am I going to be diving enough to maintain proficiency in the rebreather?
    4) Save money overall on each dive?

If you answered YES to #1 or #4 then you should do the math again.

If you answered NO to #1 and #4 and YES to #2 and #3 then consider a rebreather.

This is a article by Gregg from Wakulla Diving Center on CC vs OC costs. It is pretty informative.

$6 an hour for sorb!? I think that is a little outrageous. I think I pay about $17 per dive, that's including the O2 fill and sorb. The bailout gases just carry over from the previous dive, you know as long as they weren't needed.

The whole point of a rebreather for me was extended bottom times. So it really depends, if you don't need it for that and just want the cool factor, don't invest in one.

Just remember to stay away from rEvo rebreathers.

I've decided to learn to dive a rebreather, just not sure which one yet. Plan to try several and think awhile and wait, sleep on it, etc. Bought the Mel Clark book and a couple of others. It's not the cost, more or less, for me, or the extended bottom times, distance in caves, etc., but just the knowing and doing. Learning what it's all about and how to dive it seems worthwhile in its own right. If I learn and dive it and keep at it, fine, if not, fine too. it's worth the trip however it comes out.

Well, I'll probably hit 100-200 cave dives this year. That's up from 86 last year. Last year the dives were longer and more technical, this year, most of them are instructional. Eventually I want to be able to teach CCR. I might as well start now working towards it. Initial outlay doesn't bother me as much as ongoing outlay of money. Ok, going to read that link. Thanks for the insight.

I will definitely buy it by the pallet, I'll research next week where to get it from.
