Gene,
Thanks for the kind words. I felt comfortable enough to do the dive we did but I was still off a little. No damage to the cave or anything and I very much enjoyed the dive with you and John, thanks again for letting me join your team.

I agree with the crowd that puts technique above destination as the mark of improvement in diving. My closest buddy and I have been drilling in preparation for Cavern and Intro this October. Yesterday, we did some drills as we were finning around a local quarry. When we took a surface interval, he and I agreed on some areas we felt were very weak. Our second dive involved an hour of hovering while facing each other, and drilling our weak points repeatedly...only stopping when we had exhausted our gas supply. We both agreed it was one of our best dives to date, and all we had seen were each other's ugly mugs.
He and I have agreed that it will always be technique and safety over distance or destination...no room for egos, and I'm fortunate to be going thru this with such a good buddy.
Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'
good point, barbara, but no worries...just when i'm really getting comfy, my buddy finds a way to shake things up...

LOL when I met up with her again at Kathy's and she apologized for the millionth time I did threaten to cut her down on the board with it.
I just thought it was too funny how her plan to get John came back to get her (and me) squarely between the eyes. Fortunately it only took 10 minutes or so until I could make out faint shapes again. Cave by braille, ya gotta love it.![]()
For me, I felt I had hit a milestone when there was no more readily accessible Cave 1 cave in the Akumal/Tulum area that I hadn't dived several times.
I have specific places in a variety of caves where I have personal goals. I have yet to get through the King Pong restriction without touching anything, but I keep trying. There's a downslope to a slot in the Cuzan Nah loop that I want to do completely clean. I'd like to do a neater job of running line into the Southwest SacBe line. I really want to do the two shafts in Twin Cave without disturbing any silt.
Those are the kinds of goals I have for myself. I think they're reasonable ones, and don't pose me any risks.
If you do some lines and are honestly critical with yourself about how things went, you'll come up with your own personal goals.

I try not to judge myself on sac rate. Though it is true that the more comfortable and relaxed I am the better it gets I know I will never be a .35 .
What I do like to use as a scale is other people. I like to dive with more experienced people and I watch how they move. Am I as good as them?
Also I don't break it down into basic, intermediate or advanced. I have two levels, either I am ready for this section of cave or I am not.
