Get a Mako over a tekna because the difference is they are the same guts in a different housing. The Mako is larger, so it floats better.
The tekna are too heavy for the amount of floatation the housing offers. Not a biggie till it breaks and you need to swim it.
Never go below 130 feet, they can implode. And make SURE it has the heavy duty front plate. I saw a plastic one blow out at 110 feet.

FWIW, I would take the Tekna over a Mako any day. Both have the same flaws in construction vis a vis the polystyrene material. At the time it was the most durable material available for mass production, not so today. The Tekna does not need to be opened every time it needs to be charged. The more it's opened the better chance it will flood. A certain level of diligence is needed to avoid a blow-out, by leaving the port open for some time before plugging it in. That said, I am using a SS-UV18 and love it. I still wish it could be ridden high and tight like my old Tekna.
So many variables on all the different scooters it can be very tough to decide. That being said,
First choice is an SS
Second is a Tekna
I gave away my last Mako
The depth factor hurts if its not an ss. You can take any of this type motor and make it fast...just takes money. Honestly, your trim will have a huge impact on speed. We have switched scooters back and forth mid dive and passed each other with no prop adjustments.

Yeah, I guess any one person could use a scooter and say it performed like ____ and then have another diver use the very same scooter, same charge and give the scooter a different review... So, I thank you all for pointing out all the variables to consider when buying, and when operating a scooter, if your looking to get the most out of it... So, if I'm able to resist, I'll save a bit more and look for an SS, since weight isn't to big a deal, or even a Sierra. If I can't resist, I don't know. Speed and depth, at this point, aren't too big a concern, but runtime and range are. If I end up with a mako or tekna, thats ok because it'll be my first time owning a dpv and you have to start somewhere, but if I can find a reasonable deal on an SS or Sierra, I'll go with that.
Speaking of sierra, I've found someone willing to part with his for just over 1200; has two batt's, one is dead and the other had a recent run of 35 min's at full-cruise mixed speed? Thinking thats not bad, but it is at least 5 yrs old and I don't know if Dive X will rebuild scooters for customers at a reduced price or if you have to trade in or just buy one of their refurbished units... I'd definately go with it, if I found a place that does rebuilds on them like dpvrepair does for most LA scooters out there... Any advice or idea's based on your experiences with X scooters would be helpful, thanks
