When I first considered taking cave training I told a cave diving buddy that my family and friends thoult I was crazy. Her comment was "Just to be a cave diver that you have to be a "little off"." So the answer to your question is yes "you are probably nuts".

When I had completed my first tech courses and decided to pursue cave diving, I found it much more useful to perfect line skills while diving at my local quarry. You can do it on dry land until you think you know what you're doing, but when you try to do it while hanging motionless in the water,it's a completely different thing. Also, take a cavern course soon and your instructor will give you an entirely different perspective on guielines and their use. Hope these suggestions are helpful. And no, I do not believe you are crazy, just trying to perfect your skills, like the rest of us here!

While I agree that running a line is a totally different animal under water than it is on land I think if you continually practice the tie off portion until it becomes second nature it allows you to not focus so much on the actual line tie in. It is like playing an instrument.... the reason you play the same piece of music over and over again is to commit it to muscle memory so your hands will complete the piece with out as much thought and focus on each individual note. While you still have to think about what you are doing it allows you to be more aware of what is going on around you so you will be able to handle anything that might pop up. Just my $.02 on it.

BTW. We run lines all over the dive shop for fun and practice. I run them all over the house too so if you are crazy then I am right there with ya.

    Where do you work?

What percentage of our dives is spent running lines? If we wanted to look really good as divers, shouldn't we focus on practicing the things we do most? Bust out your coffee table and fins and start practicing your frog kicks!

I was trying, but I had a hard time getting the frog to sit still, especially after the first couple of kicks!

Are you Nuts? I hope not!
My neighbors are just glad I am not shooting weapons or running around in my unmentionables.
When I run my reels out which is quite frequent to dry or inspect they do not even give it a second look.
I guess when you have Amish for neighbors they rarely think anyone is sane! After all we are all SATAN!
I must say that they always are more likely to give me dirty looks when I am running on the road in my running shorts or biking.
I think they are jealous I can wear shorts and have a bike!

I often practice with other divers on line ground drills. It has become quite humorous and we all have fun trying to confuse each other!
I try to encourage them to familiarize themselves to their reels and using them with no eyes!
Stick to your guns, I mean reels your neighbors will get used to it.

I am an Instructor for Scuba Quest in Brandon. I don't work in the shop much but when we are hanging out there we sometimes do line practice. I was in there doing it earlier today.
