    Default Madison question

It's been a long time since I've been in madison and haven't explored much. Have done the godzilla line, but didn't complete the circuit. I know the godzilla line is a marked jump at about 200ft in on the right? If I remember correctly the line makes a teardop shape and there's one jump back onto itself to complete the circuit? I believe someone told me that the jump at the end of the circuit is easily seen on the way in and it's easiest to put in that jump then come back to the circuit line , continue along the line and pull the jump spool you placed to complete the circuit. Is there landmarks I should look for and is that what most people seem to do?

The plan is godzilla circuit then explore the banana room. From what I see the banana room line connects to the mainline at about 500p.

Thanks for any insight. I think my memory of madison will be different than reality as it was one of my first dives out of cave 1

The Godzilla circuit is one of my favorite dives. You have it right. First marked jump off goldline, to right. After the Banana Room you go along a ways until you come to a round hole in the floor with the line going down through it. Beneath the hole is a big room with a sand/silt floor that slopes downward to the right. Follow the line down the slope. At the bottom where the big room becomes a smaller room and the line starts back uphill, look ahead and you'll see a marked jump at a couple of rocks which stick up out of the floor. Tie off your jump reel and look up and to the right - the end of the line is tied off on a rock wall/shelf. By putting in this jump you are closing the loop. Go back to the main line and follow it through the Godzilla Room and around until you come back to your reel.

Banana Room line is a jump from the Godzilla line (in the Banana Room!) that comes back out to goldline. As you exit the Banana Room the line takes a sharp left on the far side of a big rock. It is easy to miss this turn and go straight ahead onto another line which ends in a collapsed area. So look for the sharp left and stay on the line. FW told me about this before the first time we did it, and I'm glad he did - the left turn is easy to miss.

Thanks. Those are exactly the hints I was looking for.

Take a look at this video. Jump to the Godzilla line is about 5 minutes in. The Bannana Room starts at 10:50, the hole in the floor to the Monkey Room is at 12:00, and the video ends with the lead diver OK'ing the double arrow jump to the end of the Godzilla Circuit.

I reported that to the line committee, and they were going to cut that other line back some. I haven't been back since, so I don't know if it is fixed or not.

    Mike,

Your description was spot on. It's funny how one's preception of an area changes as your experience changes. The godzilla line looked so different than the picture I created in my head from a couple of years back just out of cave1. I remember that jump that completes the circuit but since we weren't able to do circuits at the time, my mind didn't connect that it was the completion of the circuit.

The banana room hint from you and FW was perfect. The line takes a complete 90 degree turn to the left and there's another line (the century tunnel?) about 3 feet straight in front. I definitely would have caught that and not ended up on the wrong line, but your hint helped increase my awareness. I don't think it's the best line positioning, but I think someone would really need to be in lala land to miss the turn and end up on the wrong line. Although I'm starting to realize not everyone is as aware of their surroundings in a cave as they should be.

It was a fun little couple of lines.

Now I've been talking about going in and Martz for a while and think I may soon, but have a bit of confusion there as well. I've looked at the old map and the map that's posted at the park. They're both a little different from each other. I read about entering at Martz, heading up to the courtyard, potter's delight, and rocky horror. When I look at the map I see you can enter at Martz and head to the main tunnel and head up to that area (I've added a photo and drew what I'm talking about in blue). My teammate today said they believed that alot of people did the area a different way, but we can't figure it out on the map. Is there another way to go up in that direction that isn't on the map? I marked on the same photo a red line where there's obviously unmapped sections. Are we missing something?

If the posting of the edited map is a copyright infringement, mods please pull it down. It's the most common map strewn all over the internet, so I figured it was safe.

There is another way, but the mainline (blue) is the better choice. Your red line is a path that can get pretty sketchy, but can potentially provide an alternate exit, albeit more challenging.

We were looking for the most common route. My buddy was under the impression there is a common traverse, but I didn't believe so.

Some info for you regarding the Century Tunnel. It no longer exists! The ceiling collapsed into the entrance of that passage back in the early 90's time frame. The line that used to go back to that area was still there on my on my last visit and it passes over the old entrance to the what used to be the Century Tunnel, but it now goes to a dead end. Also there is very little if any change of depth in that area. The old entrance to the Century Tunnel is very obvious if you know where to look. Lots of debris and a big bare spot on the ceiling!

So is that line that is straight in front of you when the banana line takes a hard left the entrance to the century tunnel or is it something else? All I could see on the map that it could be is the century tunnel.

Is this the area where there was a death in the past? I remember a story I heard parts of about a death due to a collapse, but don't know any real details.
