The death was in the half hitch. There had been some debris movement in the half hitch which left a very fine powder of silt everywhere that was easy to stir up. Their dive computers showed them going to the half hitch and then turning around and going into the cave,then back. It was thought they kicked up a lot of silt at the half hitch and thought they thought it shifted again,so they to get through there with gear removal in zero viz. Also some repaired line in the half hitch allegedly had a line arrow facing the wrong direction. When ever I enter the half hitch I look at that sand slide carefully for recent movement.

There is another way, but the mainline (blue) is the better choice. Your red line is a path that can get pretty sketchy, but can potentially provide an alternate exit, albeit more challenging.

What!? I recently heard there is 4 separate (or was it 5?) exits at Madison... what exactly do you mean "alternate exit"?

5 alternate exits? I guess that depends where you're exiting from.

In this case I mean, if you don't have an alternate exit and your path of ingress is blocked (sand slide, collapse, not that these ever happened at Madison), you might benefit from an "alternate exit".
