Summer of the Dragon
Kanapaha Botanical Gardens director Don Goodman was born a hard-wired naturalist and shares the secrets of this unique perspective in tales of a lifetime of interactions with animals and plants… from the magical boyhood incident when two snake eggs hatched in his hand to the loss of his right arm to a horrifying attack by a giant alligator. (WJ has a cave related incident here}
A Closer Look: Kanapaha Botanical Gardens takes its name from the 250 acre Lake Kanapaha which borders the gardens. Kanapaha is a derivative of two words, “kana” and “paha,” meaning palm leaves and house, and refers to the thatched dwellings the Timucua Indians built along the shorelines of this lake in times past.
Like the majority of Florida lakes, Lake Kanapaha is a solution lake formed by the dissolution and collapse of the underlying limestone. Lake Kanapaha is more like an ephemeral wetland than a lake, with vest pockets of water like what is seen here, drying up and refilling in from time to time. Lake Kanapaha is considered to be a hypereutrophic lake, meaning it is very productive.
