Default First Dive Today at Ginnie

Well today we did our first dive at Ginnie. Started off with some land drills, then geared up and worked on doubles (we are doing doubles for the first time to). When we approached the water it was so clear that the section just in front of the cavern entrance looked to be the same depth as that just at the bottom of the steps such amazing viz.

Anyhow, as I stated my wife and I are doing doubles first and it went pretty good for our first time ever diving doubles, we followed a line mask off then just worked on trim, boyancy and propulsion. We seemed to do ok and our instructor took and showed us how to tie off and led us into the ballroom.

Hmm what can I say amazing I reallyl don't know the word for it just so clear and just so breath taking, just the look on my wifes face told me how she felt I saw the same look when we went down the line on our first wreck the U352 in NC. Tomorrow we are back at the ballroom, for some more drills and even a swim up to the grate to get blown off

Have fun. Listen to your instructor. Keep your mind on what you are doing, it all matters. Most of all, enjoy yourself.

Ginnie had me at hello. It was my very first cavern dive. Have fun.

It's not the years in your life that matter, but the life in your years.

I think you should give the name of this instructor who allows someone to make their first ever dive in doubles during their cavern class.

Always seek the advice of others, but NEVER let anyone else do your thinking for you.

It sounds to me like their instructer spend a good bit of time working with them in open water before allowing them to go in the Ginnie ballroom.

I'm glad to hear that you and your wife are enjoying yourselves mainedvr. Welcome to Florida, and I hope you enjoy every minute you spend here!

sigh... I was expecting a comment like this. Thanks for not letting me down.

It sounds like the instructor took a little extra time to work with the students on their new gear (I remember my instructor helping me configure gear and work on trim in my cavern class).

I have to agree that this sounds a bit foolhardy. IIRC when I first took cavern/intro there was some rule about the instructor allowing the use of doubles only if the student was well experienced with them and normally used them in open water. Otherwise it was singles with H or Y valve. Limitation was 1/3 of single or 1/6 of doubles. Am I wrong in my recollection? Learning all the new skills as well as how to handle doubles in a fragile environment doesn't sound like a good idea.

Cavern is designed to be in open water configuration. Single cylinder, standard valve. Although most instructors allow H-valves, or doubles if the student is already proficient with them, I agree that taking a cavern course and diving doubles for the first time is, well, a bit much.
