Buford Spring Questions

I posted a dive report for Buford. The report had a couple of questions embedded. I am asking the questions on this forum in hopes more people will see them.

Today I didn't actually dive. The purpose of the visit was to figure the place out.

Now for the questions.
Does the last 400' or so of the hike usually involve knee deep water and mud?
Does the spring basin usually contain clear water?

During todays recon the the basin was very dark with no sign of a spring. I am certain I was in the right place. I am assuming Buford is flooded and siphoning with all the rain we've had lately.

the basin is normally clear. the one time I went the swamp was quite dry. i actually did the walk in flip flops....long story. so it's not ALWAYS super muddy

I encountered tons on mosquitos. Only 1 biting fly, but that's about all it takes. I think the repellent keeps both under control. I will definitely bring some on the next trip.

Are you sure you were at the right spot? Did you see a water measuring gauge sticking up out of the swamp?

I've been there four times and never saw a "water measuring gauge sticking up out of the swamp" there is a wood duck box on a pole. I've been there when it was dry (December/January), I've been there when it's wet, (March/May). When it's wet you can go hip deep in muck, when it's dry you can walk to the water's edge (watch for snakes). Somebody has put orange flourecent ribbons in the trees to mark a general path to the spring. There once was a long log at the end of the trail where the swamp starts, but now it has disappeared. That log made suiting up a bit easier.

Herbie, next time I'm there I'll tag the duck box with a sign that says "Water Gauge" so we can both be accurate.

The Quarry Preserve Project was approved yesterday. So with > 5000 new home sites coming, the blue water of the Chaz will soon be forgotten. Just thought I would add this to the thread since people like Buford, The Nest, etc.

The following uses were requested as part of the Quarry Preserve PDD designation:

• Up to 5,800 dwelling units with age restricted housing not exceeding 1,300 units
• Up to 200 lodging units
• Up to 850,000 square feet of industrial / office park uses
• Up to 545,000 square feet of neighborhood and community retail uses, with up to 325,000 square feet to be allocated to highway commercial and the remainder to be internally located in a town center
• Up to three golf courses totaling 54 holes and ancillary facilities
• School facilities and park amenities
• Appropriate levels of institutional, service, cultural, and social facilities.
