Devil's Gold Line - needs repair

When we did our first dive this morning, the main line in the Gallery at Devil's was hanging slack, draping across the room. We wondered what was going on until we got to about p.175' and found it had been cut and tied back together, but the line on either end of the tie was frayed and only had a few threads remaining.

We attempted to route the line back into place where it belonged, so that it was taut, and now it is no longer draping across the room. We wanted to let someone know who could properly repair the frayed part of the line.

We also discovered why Angie and her buddy found the line slack around Hill 400 last weekend and had to reroute it to make it taut - Right at the 500' arrow, the line is frayed for around two feet where it rubs against a rock.

That's interesting. I tied a reel off on it Saturday AM, around 10:30 or so, and didn't notice anything peculier. But, on our afternoon dive, my buddies and I noticed a white line kind of wrapped around the gold line, in parallel with it. Wonder if that was related ?

Jeff and I took a look at the line in the Gallery where there was a large frayed section. I attempted to undo some wraps and pull out the slack hoping to get the "good ends" of the line togather and remove the frayed portion. But, there was not enough play in the line and we will have to go back and cut/patch this section. After realizing how fast this line was abraided, less than three months since replacement, Jeff and I after a discussion with Rose are considering running the permanant line along the floor to get it more secured, less abrasion, less manual contact, and hopefully a longer life. Plan to have it done this week.

Wow! I thought that line was fairly new! Given that some ordinary lines remain intact after >5 years, that says a lot about the traffic in that system. Gold line ain't cheap. Thanks to you folks for maintaining it. Two weeks ago I saw no fraying of that line. It was just slack from perhaps stretch.

I think we were probably in there in the morning before you, BobK. We noticed it and fixed some of the placements around 9:30 ... it was swaying in the flow about 6 feet or so below where it normally does... then went back in the afternoon and cleaned it up a little better near the entrance where it had come loose from a placement because of the slack.

We were also there both last Saturday and Sunday... I noticed last Saturday it looked fine but by Sunday the line had been stretched up pretty high over an outcropping in the same area where it was cut and tied this weekend. Not sure if they're related though.

I don't know if it's the same spot you're speaking of, but diving in Nov. and also in Dec. I noticed the same tieoff coming undone and causing the line to hang slack. The line is tied off around a boot shaped formation off the wall, and the shape would not allow the line to stay tight. We rewrapped it on 2 dives we did there- the only permanent solution would be like an anchor point or alternative line placement. Very annoying.

hmm...
wont be a good idea to put some of that kevlar line only in those corners where the line gets always bad?
It will resist the abrasion a bit better and if is just in small sections wont be a big deal.

That might be interesting for lost line drills during the intro classes....now it will be close to their finger tips.
