    Default Missing AL80s

A friend who has been diving all week at ginnie just called and said his buddy bottles were taken from inside the eye today.

He had 2 al80s at the start of the goldline in the eye that he left there last night and this morning were gone. Both silver in color with apeks regulators attached. Markings of RD or RRD on the bottles.

He is solo and camping so figured it was safer to leave them in the cave especially since his o2 bottle tried to walk away as well. If anyone picked them up since they have been in and out of the cave for the better part of a week please let me know.

    Thanks.

... and it goes without saying, "Check the office at Ginnie."

I left some deco bottles below the Eye planning to do a big dive the next morning. Some "good Samaritan" found them and brought them to the office. It was only a stroke of luck that we ran into Rose the following morning before the dive and found out she had our bottles in the office.

That is just so wrong :-(
If I was in the office at Ginnie and someone brought a tank that was "found", I would ask them to bring it right back, not cross go and not collect $200....

We learned from the experience. Much more careful about dropping bottles. Now I'll place a stage bottle in the cave overnight, but I generally do not leave deco mixes laying around unless I am in the cave. Also bring them further in.

Really would have been the pits to exit and not have deco gas. Would have been a long cold shiver!

Just can't leave anything where open water divers can get at them. I leave my tanks at the stop sign in the cave zone.

add a wet note that you will return on such and such date. it's good to have Samaritans and a simple note will help them do what's right.

It's amazing to me how many people need to learn such a simple lesson. "If it's not yours...don't mess with it."

I certainly don't mean that anyone is justified by moving an o2 bottle, but if you're doing a big dive, why not leave the stages in the cave and just drop the AL40 on the way in, or way back by the lips? O2 bottle theft has happened time and time again, I would never leave one overnight.

Any word on the missing bottle that started this thread?

Exactly! There were several lessons learned.

    1. O2/deco bottles now go in and out when I do and they are left after the sign on the mainline. Wasn't aware of O2 theft, but even feel better now about carrying them down to the mainline.

    2. The only bottles I leave in overnight, are stage bottles that are actually a ways in the cave.
