    Default Back up lights

I want to get a couple of new back up lights. I would like some feed back though on which way I should go and why. Is halogen or LED the way to go for back ups?

I use a combination of both. I have two halogen "scout" type lights and two DR LED lights. The LED lights put out a good blue white light, have very long burn times, and no filaments to break...but the penetration with an LED light is about 15' with current technology. That's not a lot if doing a line search or lost buddy/equipment search. Penetrtation is where the halogen lights "shine"...especially the focusable type like the 7.5w Salvo light.
On a dive, I typically check and store my two halogen lights as true back ups and I fire up my LED's for the duration of the dive. The LED's give a good "halo" of lights around me for reading gauges and doing task while keeping my primary pointed out in front of me. If my primary fails I am not in a black out ever. This set up is even better when sidemounting.

    Will,
I think I just had this discussion on TDS. I like my Chuck Noe, Photon Torpedos. They are made of a solid machined rod of delrin. They run on 3 C cells, with Halogen head. I used one to scooter out of Jackson Blue last weekend, from around 3600'. Great lights and great service from Chuck. You can veiw them on the web at GulfTex Scuba. They are also a great value for the price.
    Hope this helps,
    Kenny P.

And if you like the latest LED technology, the H LED inserts fit Chuck's lights perfectly. We love ours and they are very bright.

Like Kenny P said, check out the TDS threads on LED inserts and back up lights. Very informative.

I use one of each, because they have different weak points. It is less likely that the will both fail I think.

Check out this KICK@$$ little light....it's what I use as a back up light.

    PELICAN

    SABERLITE LED LIGHT PEL363
Conventional LED flashlights generate a weak wide beam. Pelican?s new Recoil LED Technology? works like a lighthouse - it focuses the light by firing backwards. 100% of the light is captured and reflected forward. The result: A super bright white collimated beam that cuts through the thickest smoke, fog and dust. Plus our exclusive voltage regulated LEDs maintain peak brightness longer.

I have a Slimline and a Wreck light and I put 1 on left side and 1 on right side so if one goes I can use the other. I carry (2) UK SL6 lights on Harness and (2) UK miniQ40's in my pouch. I like the beam better than bright light that goes nowhere I have used the L.E.D.'s but do not like them cause they have no beam they are nice but I can not see 10' in front of me with them. So I like the SL6 for the beam of light you get with it. But it all comes down to personal pref. and what works for you.

    Lee,

Could you describe how you store your LED back ups to give you this task lighting?

This thread is rather timely, as I just had my primary fail Sunday while inside a wreck amongst a bunch of piping and valves.

My Pelican backup fired up when I needed it, and has good penetration, but when I when I was packing up my gear, I also found out that it had flooded as well. I have had two of these flood so far and am looking into another style backup.

    Thanks,
    Steve
