Thread: Insurance

    Default Insurance

Hey all, my dive insurance is due to expire in a few days. I know some of you have talked of alternatives to DAN. What are your thoughts? I don't do exploration level dives; just another newbie in the tourist caves and hope to make it to the NC coast in the near term. Is there something besides DAN I should look into?

    Thanks!

DAN provides great service, is well known, does a ton for the dive community, and is dirt cheap for the protection offered. Why bother with anything else?

I have to second the support for DAN. I had an issue with a ruptured ear drum on a dive a while back, and they covered everything. Just be sure to call them before seeking medical treatment (if possible), as that's the primary provision of their coverage. For the price, you can't beat what they offer!

I have and will continue to hold DAN Insurance.

I don't do exploration level dives either, but have been carrying the premium DAN insurance since I've started diving.

Once you start looking at medical expenses, what your own insurance company covers and what they don't... DAN makes sense.

Even if you have good insurance already, from all the articles and studies read about DAN, nobody can handle the situation better than DAN.
Just make sure to CALL THEM FIRST before getting an ambulance ride or anything else. I understand they are the ones that must handle everything in order to cover all of it.

Even after years of diving without incident, just ONE trip to the emergency room or chamber will pay for itself. You will be glad you had it on tap.

I just renewed mine this morning.

I'm about to purchase insurance for the first time, I read through this, and I read through DAN's page. I don't mean to hijack, but one thing to note is DAN's mention of Recreational dives. Is that Rec NOT Tec or is that Rec (tec included), but it doesn't cover commercial diving? I saw only the Preferred and Master cover depths below 130, but would it cover caves? How about planned deco and/or trimix?

There are two insurers to consider of which DAN is the first for most divers involved in sport, rec, or occasional exploration. Then you have Lloyd's of London of which will insure you at a much higher premium than DAN but will cover you in Commercial, REC, or explorarion diving.
I run up a $37,000.00 hospital bill from simple cave dive in the Wekiva river some years ago, & DAN
picked up the tab ! I carry 3 health & emergency insurers, of which DAN is 1st choice relating to diving. At $43.00 a year for piece of mind coverage it is well worth it !

Anyone have any experience with DiveAssure (www.diveassure.com)? They have the same coverages at about the same price as DAN but are a primary insurance provider vs a secondary insurance provider?

I switched to them a few years ago because of the primary insurance benefit, but have not had to use them for any claims. Would love to hear if anyone had any experiences with them.

I was going to switch to DiveAssure this year for the primary insurance, but they have an odd exclusion for some states, mine (NC) being one of them. You are not covered if the accident occurs within 25 miles of your home. We generally dive further out than that, but for a lot of inshore spots, I am less than 25 miles from home.
