Gear Insurance

Looking to purchase gear insurance for my camera gear. I'd like to hear from others about the different options and what kind of service you got from them. I was thinking of going through Dan for it. I am mostly worried about a flood. I got lucky with one camera but this one has three seals and more control seals than the last one. The port seal is hard to see when its put on the camera. If I had deep pockets I would not bother but could not afford a replacement for a long time.

Talk to your agent about a rider on you homeowner's policy. It's very often the cheapest, and easiest if you have a claim.

If you have Allstate, disregard the above.

Back when I was bringing cameras underwater, I used DEPP http://www.awryinc.com/depp/mainmenu.aspx to insure my camera equipment. Made two claims with them before deciding to take an extended(which still continues do to a lack of funds - LOL) underwater photography break. Never had a problem with the claims.

You need to insure other basic equipment before you can insure your camera stuff... Still came out quite cheap.

I've used the flood insurance offered through DAN and have had it since 2005. I had one flood in 2006 and they sent me funds to replace the camera and to repair the lens as Nikon said it was repairable.
As per what Sludge said about coverage under your homeowner's policy -- I have Allstate and have checked on it through them but decided not to do it.

My late dive buddy had the insurance through DAN and was very pleased. He flooded his NikV a few years ago, along with the 15mm lens. DAN paid for the complete repair with Southern Nikonos minus the deductible.

He flooded it in Temple of Doom. Bumped the lens against his knee and popped it off. I'll never forget the picture of him in my mind flashing me with his light while we were still in the cenote before heading in. I looked down and he was holding his camera up at me and pointing to the missing lens. I think my eyes were huge as saucers. He surfaced and I went on a lens hunt. He hid the camera and lens in the jungle and we proceeded to do our dive.

I will second DEPP have had them now for 4 years no problems. But all I have is my dive gear and my big$$ dive computors. I think I have 10.000 covered and I pay $152.00 a year.

Be careful if you go the homeowner route. Most of them have limits for photo equipment, guns etc. Ours will only pay for $500.00 worth of guns and $1500.00 worth of photo gear. Of course they would be more than happy to sell me a rider for those items but it was insanely expensive.
