Default Underwater Cave Cartography - Mexico, Bermuda, and the American South

Underwater Cave Cartography - Mexico, Bermuda, and the American South

I will be giving a 30-40 minute presentation about The exploration and mapping of underwater caves in places like Chichen Itza, Mexico, The island nation of Bermuda, and Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas. These caves include ancient Mayan sacrificial burial sites, The deepest underwater cave in the United States, and The three longest underwater caves in the United States outside of Florida. Come see photographs and video of these sites taken by National Geographic contributors Tamara Thomsen and others, and maps created by myself and Christina Richards with the help of teams of other divers. Following the presentation we can talk about surveying dry and wet caves, diving, rebreathers, and the potential for sump diving and exploration in the pacific north west! I will bring a number of paper maps in various stages of completion, and be happy to talk about techniques and processes.

The presentation will be held at the monthly meeting of the Cascade Grotto of the National Speleological Society on Friday the 21st of June, 2013 from 7-9PM at the following location:

Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave, South., Tukwila, WA 98168

We hope to see everyone there!

Didn't take you long to connect with the local grotto, eh? Wish I could make it.

So, how much line have you laid in Washington so far?

None, yet. It takes time! I haven't even gotten around to hooking up the compressor yet! We have gone lava tubing, but it's not really the same. Would make nice scooter cave if they were flooded, however. Still looking for that as well.

It's volcano country. Surely that means cracks and fissures, warm water heated by geothermals. fly over looking for white steam clouds at mountain base? Ice caves on Mt Rainer? Go further north and a bit west for caves in the BC rockies? Don't forget Alaska, the Glaciers, and the Icebergs. The diving in the San Juans is nice, but cave less...maybe. Those islands are the tops of mountains.

Ah Skip, I wish it were that easy, you make it sound like a lot of driving, which it is. We are slowly working our way into the local scene, it just takes time to meet up with the people and projects that are doing things, in between our own projects.

Wish I was close enough to make it. Really enjoyed learning from you earlier in the year.

At 16, I thought it was pretty damn cool... the upper section at least. Where (generally) is this other lava tube? Are there many others?
