    Default Sea Hunt

Ran across this gem doing some research on the keys and diving. This is episode 28 from the first season in1958...has a little bit of everything. The cave shots might be Silver Springs?? Anyone id that scooter?

    Anyway: Enjoy and happy holidays.

It was watching Sea Hunt when I was a little kid that got me hooked on diving. Mike Nelson was THE MAN!

I have the entire series on DVD and watching them now they do look a bit silly but back then it was "high adventure" to me. It doesn't matter though because they're still fun to watch and enjoy 40+ years later. Just about every (but not all) of the underwater scenes were shot at Silver Springs but on the program they "Traveled the world". I like watching them tossing those doubles around like they were as light as balsa wood but that's because that's what they were, carved and painted balsa wood.

Anyhow, Sea Hunt = good stuff!

These made a diver of me too.

I remember the old doubles, weren't they twin 30s? The set that he throws into the Jeep is definitely real.

I've never been to silver springs in the past 30 years and don't know whether that's where the pictures were taken or not. To me it looked like soem shots could have been Troy Springs. One other looks like you are looking out from the opening at the Ginnie Ballroom. That water is shallow there if you watch him hit the surface at the end of the shot. One other looks like it has a stairway or wall/sitting bench running around the base of it, similar to Juniper Springs or some other commercial place.

My favorite is the scooter shot where he comes towad you then passes over you in the shot. If you continue to look in back of him as he passes over you can see a support diver or just someone else in the background, close to the surface. It's only there for split second.

Surprising that there was no mask ripping or hose cutting in this episode.

That would be a good trivia question. "How many total times was a hose cut in Sea Hunt?" Back then it sure was dramatic with all those bubbles!

Sea Hunt used a lot of stock footage shot in a tank at Marine land, but then graduated to real OW locations. They shot a great deal of footage at Silver Springs and also shot on location at Tarpon Springs as well as Catalina Island and the Bahamas.

Technically, Silver Springs footage shows up in over 100 of the 155 Sea Hunt episodes, but it is kind of like the original Battlestar Galactica series where stock footage was used in multiple episodes.

That said, it was one of my major motivators to get into diving.

But after 25 years of diving I have yet to have someone cut a hose.

All the bubbles look dramatic, but it is always the exhaust hose, so it is no big deal. In some episodes, you can see the soon to be cut hose with pin hole leaks where it connects to the can, so they were often cutting hoses that were going to be replaced anyway.

Mike Nelson used a 25 knot nuclear powered scooter with a 150-year run time.........everyone knows that!

And that was with the blade pitch only set on one!

I could help you with that!

Land of Enchantment -- not so great for cave diving, but mighty scenic!
