Purchased my first drysuit any advice on which P valve to install and which is the best condom cath. to use.

I have the Light Monkey balanced. It has worked great so far. It started to leak but a cheap valve fixed that. As for catheters, Rochester Widebands.
I'd go LM Unbalanced Pee Valve. And Rochester Wide Bands.
one says balanced, one says unbalanced. Any reasoning for the two choices? external catheters are basically of two kinds also: the adhesive as part of the catheter or a separate band that is wrapped after donning the catheter. I know the ones with adhesive already on them won't "stick" well if you are sweaty before putting it on! Never tried the ones with the adhesive band.

Get a p valve with a screw open. Don't get one with the little duck bill balancing mechanism in the valve body. I've had and heard of so many failures in those that basically everyone I know just glued those shut. Still works fine if you just prime the pump in a few feet of water before you dive.
1. you can go with a p-valve with a detachable hose, or one that does not detach. The idea here is that if you aren't using it, you can remove it. Also easier to replace if you ever need to.
2.you can go with balanced or unbalanced. Balanced means that it equalizes the air pressure in the tube and prevents squeeze (but that means you plan to go pretty deep - trimix diving). Unbalanced does not equalize. When you pee, it won't make much difference - the tube fills with urine, which doesn't compress much!
3. you can go with one that has a bolt or one that does not. All have a check valve to prevent back-leaking and flooding the catheter and/or drysuit. The bolt is there in case the check valve fails. But of course you must loosen the bolt before peeing. Some have said the bolt holes are too small and tend to create back-pressure. So if when you go you really go, the bolt might not be a good idea (although you can put it in and take it out whenever you want - no need to dive with it in every dive every time).
4. you can go with a larger flat "button" on the outside, or a smaller taller button on the outside. Sidemount/nomount, you may want the lower profile (which is boltless).
5. purchase three sizes of external catheters and try them on. I like to carry a few XXXL size for when a buddy asks to borrow one.

I've never met anyone with a balanced that didn't leak. I had two. Within weeks of getting them, I spent dives pee'ing all over myself. I went unbalanced and haven't had an issue since.
I'd go Steve Gamble unbalanced. I have had his in many suits over the years. All good.
Give it time... it will.
We've met briefly. My Halcyon balanced is fine 2 years out. It seems (or seems to seem) the Halcyon balanced have less issues than other brands, although I am sure at some point it will start to leak. If it does I'll plug the balancing port.
I wonder if the substance people clean with has anything to do with it. I use a medical cleaning solution from work that doesn't really react with anything.
Thanks for all the good advice, now any suggestions were to order condoms?
CATHETERS
Go to the second page for the wide bands.
You might want to order some samples from Rochester. When they sent my free test-pack, I received enough catheters for a 3-week diving vacation. Ask for all types (Ultraflex, Pop-on, Wideband, Spirit I-III) and choose your estimated size, plus one up and one below that size.
That's what I did and I received a generous package of catheters to test and try out.
In my opinion all the Rochester catheters are great and hold up nicely for an entire day of diving. In retrospect I liked the Wideband and the Ultraflex most.
As for the P-valve, my instructor recommended the LM unbalanced which has worked great so far. The only time I had a little trouble with it was when (unfortunately) I listened to someones advice and went down the ear in Ginnie without putting any air whatsoever into the drysuit. The hickey I had on my will*** was gone two days later, so it wasn't all that much of an issue.

Did you get your samples directly from Rochester? Did you call them directly or order online?
Yes, I ordered them through http://www.rocm.com

I've used the balanced p-valve for nearly a decade with no leaks. DUI. In the TLS350.

I've got the LM balanced, eventually it leaked until I hot glued the balance valve shut, then later the nylon fitting broke off even with the valve. Easily removed and replaced with a brass fitting found at Lowe's.
I have a DR balanced in one suit with Roch. wide bands.
In my DUI CF200 OMS un-balanced with Roch. wide bands.
Both have worked flawlessly till yesterday when I had a cath with bad glue!
Never happened before but it was just a bump in the post dive fixed with a few baby wipes and a new cath.

Has anyone had trouble with the glue on Rochester sticking too much? I had a terrible experience where I thought I was pulling the skin off trying to remove it!! Any advice?
Shower, shave, and trim the night before. Put the catheter on in the morning. Go diving. Go home and remove the catheter in a warm shower.
Use adhesive removing medical wipes for multiple days of diving, to prevent glue buildup, or it gets progressively worse with each day.
Been there, done that. These things are worth their weight in gold!

One of the Shirley's recommended them to me a few years ago and I don't go near a catheter with out one of these wipes handy...
Have had this happen and much worse!
That is for another thread!
Try this, " skin so Soft " original gelled body oil from Avon apply to your member once you remove the cath.
Leave the oil on over night then shower and clean very well before applying another cath.
Do not try to remove right away once you put one on it is HXXL! Literally you should get into a hot shower to loosen the glue.
If not you are going to bleed! Been there done that!
Even with all the trial and error it has been all worth it would go thorough it all again.
Being able to go at any part of the dive is priceless!

All these stories about the trials and tribulations involved with gluing things to one's genitalia make me like my wetsuits even more!
Now ya got it Mike !!! ( LOL )

1. Do NOT try to remove by pulling on the tip only. This could be considered a "variant" of Chinese finger cuffs. Fun as a kid, but not for this "de-application"
2. Loose tooth tied to a door knob.... uh, not a very good idea
3. Contact Joey Buttafuoco's ex. She has a VERY QUICK and EFFECTIVE method. Unfortunately, it's a one time only solution.
4. The "Man up Bro..." technique certainly has merit, but can potentially build callouses. Depending on your style of fun, that may or may not be a good thing. Oh, and be certain not to "Man Up" too much during removal, unless that is your thing ... not that I am judging ...
5. Think about pulling a T shirt off by lifting from the waist and pulling over your head. Just make certain to carefully separate yourself as it turns inside out, not after.
All the rest, warm shower, medical wipes, and so forth good suggestions. But I have found a careful application of suggestion 5 goes a long way. Or in my case makes short work of a long standing problem :)
This is almost as good as the She-p page. Am I the only female reading this? Come on Shirley. Fess up.
I guess I am already "toughened" from years of "abuse". I prefer the band aid treatment.
roll them up after your dive, that way in a pinch you can reuse them. its got to be less painful than pulling on the tip.

6. Remaining residue from shampoo & conditioner used the morning of a dive can cause the glue to breakdown leading up to a terrible separation.
7. You might be getting away for the weekend with some alone time between dives. But thinking about the contents, just remember, hand lotion is "only for your hands!" :smt102

Yep, I got the idea. I tryed a sample used all the suggestions but still almost had to give my manhood up to remove the thing. I think if you just think about having to remove the condom cath. you will not need to P. Problem solved.
Its easy to roll off after 2 or 3 dives. If it isnt then use some vinegar or whatever you are using to push through the p-valve to clean it. Otherwise wait till you get home and take a hot shower. All those work for me.
Cut the whole thing off after the dive be one one of the ladies and don't worry about the rest of your life.
Forgot that there is the femal version the shepee out there. Guess they battle with the same glue.
Hobeatly, its like a bandage, some prefer slow removal some the fast way. I believe slow is better, maybe more painfull but you can stop once you pull up the the skin.
