I was diving the eye on Saturday as part of my Basic course. There were quite a few lines Saturday as well but nothing as bad as what has been described above.
First of all ,
Raph I did see you I was just too busy to wave (no laughing OK, my new gear is a different size than i'm used to !!)
Second, I was in front of Bert's class, and had absolutely ZERO options to place the line, I have no idea how he could have found somewhere else to put his. I never saw it since we didn't come back out for 3 hrs and they were all gone by then.
Yes there were far too many lines in there, i've seen it that bad many times before, I really don't know what the solution is. I'm not for putting another permanent line. Perhaps some other starting tie off points would help, then at least people could start from a different place.

It was bad... There were a few places that looked like a bowl of Spaghetti exploded all over the place. Lines were loose and runn eraticly all over the place. Running a line isnt brain surgery. An example of how bad it can be sometimes... Two lines placed from the ear: Line number one goes from the secodary tie off (it was in open water as well as the primary) and straight to the main line up on the wall with a few wrapps on a knub under the line. Line number two was in with no secondary tie off ran stright for the other line, wrapped around line number one what looked like four times to make a placement then went up to the main line.
I actually saw this one day not long ago
the ear was a mess saturday in the cavern zone
like a bowl of spaghetti exploded. one line was loose and blowing in the flow running from the ceiling to the floor it seemed like.
While I find so many lines distracting, I developed and practice 'line avoidance' skills. Its very helpful in penetrating 'real' wrecks in open water diving. I'm happy that there is that much interest in cave diving. I do get a laugh looking at how some of those primaries are laid out. I remember when!

I have a suggestion. If you go in the Eye, and there are already several lines, don't add another one. You have several options:
1. Go back out, and enter through the Ear (river entrance)
2. Go ahead in through the Eye, and don't leave a reel. if you come back, and all the reels are gone, exit out they Ear.
3. Pick one reel, and leave a slate on it, offering to remove it for the owner, it they get back first. Tell them to confirm that they did indeed exit. If you get back, and the reel is gone, follow #2 above.
I remember once upon a time if you felt that there too were many reels in a entrance and you thought it was iffy to run another one you waited for a team or two to exit.
If cave diving were Star Wars, who would be Yoda?
