Default Underwater Speleology notice and update:

Fellow NSS-CDS members and cave divers:

I want to address the situation with the missing issues. Some previous issues of UWS did not reach you, or they arrived under another member?s name. I understand your frustration, and I?m working to get an issue out to you. The publishing software is a bit of a learning curve for me but I?m aiming to have the next issue at the printer?s within 10 days to 2 weeks.

There have been problems with the mailing list, computer crashes, lost work, and more. This is not to make excuses but to let you know some of the reasons.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Hi Barbara,

Thanks for all the hard work and it is really appreciated,
    but
the day of paper magazines is over. You should look into sending UWS to the subscribers as a pdf docunent. They'll get it faster, printing and mailing costs nothing, and back issues are always available.
The only real disadvantage is that nonmembers will no longer be able to read it in their doctors waiting rooms.

I like having a paper book or magazine, but I have to agree. The cost of UWS was costing the organization pretty much close to the cost of the membership dues for each person, so any money the organization made for other things had to come from the workshops. To me one of the advantages to an online edition is that video and links can be embedded for more content.

We tried to do away with the paper version a few years back & the move was not accepted by a large number of members who rejected the notion vehemently.

Times have changed in the last couple of years. Nowardays I think that every cave diver either has a computer at home, or has access to a computer somewhere else, even if his access is only via a smart phone.

If people dont like it too bad if the cds is losing money for printed versions. I prefer printed but get it. Printed journals are going the way of the dodo. Is the cds going to lose all of its members due to no printed journal? I doubt it. I suspect more people join to dive cow than to get uws

I have to agree. Paper is wasteful, ecologically unsound, and a tremendous waste of resources.

I enjoy having paper magazines to read when I'm traveling (for some reason it just "feels right"), but agreed... basically the entire civilized world has internet access at this point. No reason to continue wasting the money printing something.

At one point 100% of the membership dues the CDS took in went to UWS. I really doubt it has changed a tremendous amount.
