I watched a report on EMP's the other night on Fox News which stated that our entire electric grid would go f.u.b.a.r. if an electro magnetic pulse, resulting from either a nuclear explosion in our stratosphere or one caused by the Sun itself were to occur. It further stated that in 1858, one occurred, caused by the Sun, that fried all telegraph systems, and even destroyed the newly laid trans-Atlantic cable, which had to be replaced. The representative of the U.S. Electromagnetic Pulse Commission also stated that it is believed that these occur every 100 to 150 years, and that we are due for another one soon. This made me start thinking, " Damn, here's another potential problem that may bite me in the ass while cave diving." I'm not worried about my regulator's, no electronics there, but my dive computer may crap-out, along with all my dive lights. I guess we're going to have to start carrying Cyalume light sticks as part of our back-up lighting. Or is my paranoia going too far? The mind boggles.
