I never heard of a hotel burning down from someone charging SLA's.. Just sayin'.
Yes, but I think think there are smaller lighter scooters that use SLAB's or VRLA's, different names for sealed spill proof lead acid batteries. I think for a back up due to simplicity lead acid and a brushed motor with no electronics is the way to go, although I have nothing against NIMH ether
Try a short tube SS or Gavin. Will give you the required burn time, and the reliability of SLAs. Rebreather divers carry back up open circuit gas due to possible rebreather failures. With the failures I have heard people experience with Nimh or Lion powered scooters,a backup SLA is sur nice,if not necessary. Not trying to open up a Nimh/Lion vs SLA debate, but I am saying that I trust the low tech of SLAs.

Kelly,
Your probably right about the NIMH, but of course you would have to have two battery failures on the same dive, even lead acids can internally short, doesn't happen very often of course.
How about Tekna / Mako's ? Not reliable enough for a back-up scooter? I've been told Tekna's are heavy as a rock making them not very towable, but don't know anything really about Mako's
Do the NIMH battery packs have electronics in them like the LIPO's do? The LIPO's have I believe a battery management module which controls cell balancing during charging as well as low the voltage cut-off point, and possibly other things, it's the electronics that I believe would be more failure prone than the pack itself, just an opinion though.
A complaint I have heard about Nimh and Lion is the scooter just quitting in the middle of the dive. At least SLA they weaken, and the scooter goes slower, but it still goes. I heard one story of a solo diver coming back to their scooter after a swim,go on the trigger, went 50ft,and then nothing-no reason,no warning. At least this story had a happy ending, and the person did good gas planning for a swim dive out. Too many issues with Nimh and Lion batteries with welded packs etc. Many years ago there used to be discussions on back up lights not to trust just one battery type. For example, one back up light might have alkaline, the other Ni cad,or the old Eveready silver battery. The lesson here is never trust one type of battery,so it may be prudent to have Nimh primary, and SLA backup.
